  1. 6. Minimizing the Effect of Geometric Variation in Compliant Assemblies

    Author : Stefan Dahlström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; FEA; Compliant assembly evaluation; Tolerancing; sheet metal assembly;

    Abstract : Sheet metal assemblies are often used as support structures in automobiles, airplanes and appliances. These structures not only provide a frame for other modules to be assembled, but also give the product its aesthetic form. All assembly processes are affected by part and process variation.     Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Spherical graphite iron; component casting; high silicon ductile iron; digital image correlation DIC ; in-situ tensile testing; in-situ cyclic testing; DIC pattern generation; pit etching; micro-scale deformation; micro-crack; finite element analysis FEA ; focused ion beam FIB milling; segjärn; komponentgjutning; högkisellegerat segjärn; digital image correlation DIC ; insitu dragprovning; in-situ cyklisk provning; DIC-mönstergenerering; grop-etsning; mikroskalig deformation; mikrosprickor; finite element analys FEA ; fokuserad jonstråle FIB avverkning;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the effect of microstructural variation on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of ductile iron. To research and determine these effects, two grades of ductile iron, (i) GJS-500-7 and (ii) high silicon GJS-500-14, were cast in a geometry containing several plates with different section thicknesses in order to produce microstructural variation. 4. 9. Ultimate and Residual Strength Assessment of Ship Structures

    Author : Artjoms Kuznecovs; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ship structures; collision; corrosion; residual strength; ultimate strength; age-related degradation; nonlinear FEA; Smith method;

    Abstract : The prevention of ship structural failures and reduction of accident consequences contribute to increased safety at sea and reduced environmental impact. A need for reliable and efficient ship designs facilitates knowledge accumulation and the development of tools for the assessment of hull structural responses to acting loads. READ MORE

  5. 10. Holistic Assessment of Survival Time after Ship Collision

    Author : Per Hogström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; non-linear FEA; failure modelling; ship collision; sheet metal failure; uncertainty analysis; Damage stability;

    Abstract : Collisions between ships contribute to ship losses even in modern time, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strives towards a more risk-based view on addressing the damage stability of ships. This thesis presents a holistic methodology for computing the consequences of ship collisions. READ MORE
