  1. 11. Structure and functions of heparan sulfate/heparin – Importance of glucuronyl C5-epimerase and heparanase

    Author : Juan Jia; Jin-Ping Li; Ulf Lindahl; Hiroshi Nakato; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS) and heparin are linear polysaccharide chains covalently O-linked to serine residues within the core proteins, so called HS proteoglycans (PGs) or heparin PG. HSPGs are produced by almost all mammalian cells and known to play important roles in developmental processes, physiological and pathological conditions; whereas heparin PG is produced by mast cells and best known as an anticoagulant in clinic. 2. 12. Human Embryonic Stem Cells: Directed Differentiation into Posterior Foregut Endoderm and a Functional Assay for Definitive Endoderm

    Author : Martina Johannesson; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : A decade has passed since the first human embryonic stem cell (hESC) line was established, providing immense hope in curing diseases by cell replacement therapy. For instance, in the pancreas, the insulin-producing β-cells are damaged in diabetes patients, and a successful replacement of those cells could provide a cure. READ MORE

  3. 13. FGFs and Wnts in pancreatic growth and β-cell function

    Author : Stella Papadopoulou; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Wnt; FGF; pancreas; Notch; signal transduction; development; proliferation; progenitors; β-cells; feedback; GSIS; diabetes; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Mesenchymal-epithelial interactions are pivotal for proper pancreatic growth and development. The pancreatic progenitor cells present in the early pancreatic anlagen proliferate and eventually give rise to all pancreatic cell types. READ MORE

  4. 14. Non-coding RNA-based therapeutics and biomarkers for treatment and detection of vascular disease

    Author : Greg Winski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease (CVD), with atherosclerosis as its main underlying pathology, is the most prominent cause of death worldwide. Progression and rupture of atherosclerotic plaques lead to potential adverse pathological events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. READ MORE

  5. 15. EXT Proteins in Heparan Sulfate Biosynthesis

    Author : Marta Busse; Marion Kusche-Gullberg; Tarja Kinnunen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS) is a long unbranched polysaccharide composed of alternating glucosamine and hexuronic (glucuronic or iduronic) acid residues. Modification by sulfate groups in various positions generates a highly heterogeneous molecule. READ MORE
