  1. 1. The role of young-of-the-year fish in lake ecosystems

    Author : Pia Romare; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrobiology; Rutilus rutilus; Perca fluviatilis; diet-dependent growth; density dependent growth; behavioural cascade; 0 fish behaviour; horizontal echo sounding; biomanipulation; trophic cascade; predation pressure; young-of-the-year fish; trophic interactions; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Food chain theory is based on consumption; that is, presupposing that the only important interaction between organisms is that they actually meet in an unstructured environment and that one of them is consumed. Recently, studies, including biomanipulation projects, have indicated that trophic interactions are more complex than predicted by food chain theory. READ MORE

  2. 2. Flow design for migrating fish

    Author : Elianne Lindmark; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : The utilization of rivers for hydropower production leads to problems for migrating fish, such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta). Both salmon and trout reproduce in fresh water, but spend their adult years at sea. To overcome man-made obstructions to and from the spawning grounds the fish needs help. READ MORE

  3. 3. Protein Yield and Protein Isolate Quality when applying pH-shift Processing on Cod, Haddock and Blue Whiting Fillets- Effects of Replacing Centrifugation with Filtration

    Author : Helgi Nolsøe; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; NATURAL SCIENCES; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; fish; cod; protein yield; pH-shift processing; haddock; centrifugation; surimi; Protein isolate; filtration; blue whiting;

    Abstract : A more sustainable fishery and a better utilization of the harvested fish raw material are currently of great importance to prevent overexploitation of our marine resources. Production of protein isolates to use for example as surimi has for many years been an important way of better utilizing low-value fish species and fish rest raw materials. READ MORE

  4. 4. Telomere analysis of normal and neoplastic hematopoietic cells : studies focusing on fluorescence in situ hybridization and flow cytometry

    Author : Magnus Hultdin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomedicine; telomere; telomerase; fluorescence in situ hybridization; flow cytometry; flow-FISH; replication timing; chronic lymphocytic leukemia; immunoglobulin gene; prognosis; Biomedicin; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The telomeres are specialized structures at the end of the chromosomes composed of the repeated DNA sequence (TTAGGG)n and specific proteins bound to the DNA. The telomeres protect the chromosomes from degradation and end to end fusions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mechanisms and Consequences of Chromosomal Instability in Malignant tumours

    Author : Ylva Stewénius; Avdelningen för klinisk genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; structural rearrangement; Ewing family tumour; Chromosomal instability; nephroblastoma; Wilms tumour; chromosomal aberration; anaphase bridge; subtelomeric FISH; breakage-fusion-bridge cycle;

    Abstract : In this thesis, telomere deficiency with subsequent anaphase bridging was found to be associated with chromosomal instability in established colorectal cancer cell lines and in Wilms tumour. In colorectal cancer cell lines, anaphase bridging was observed to generate both numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations and was also associated with the presence of multipolar mitoses.
