  1. 21. Nutrient imbalance in Norway spruce

    Author : Gunnar Thelin; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silviculture; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; nitrogen saturation; base saturation; pH; multiple limitation; deficiency; copper; boron; potassium; pollution; sustainability; conifers; forestry; forestry technology; Skogsvetenskap; skogsbruk; skogsteknik; Soil Science; agricultural hydrology; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära;

    Abstract : The studies presented in my thesis indicate that growing Norway spruce in monoculture does not constitute sustainable forest management in a high N and S deposition environment, such as in southern Sweden. The combination of N-induced high growth rates and leaching due to soil acidification causes soil reserves of nutrients to decrease. READ MORE

  2. 22. Behaviour of Pine Sawflies in Relation to Pheromone-Based Pest Management

    Author : Fredrik Östrand; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; effective sampling area; mark-release-recapture; climate; longevity; sampling range; Symphyta; Hymenoptera; monitoring; dispersal; polyandry; mating disruption; integrated pest management; behaviour; sex pheromone; Neodiprion sertifer; Diprionidae; Djurekologi; Zoology; Zoologi; Silviculture; forestry; forestry technology; Skogsvetenskap; skogsbruk; skogsteknik;

    Abstract : Pine sawflies (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) are severe pine defoliators. This thesis investigated sawfly behaviour related to the use of pheromones in integrated pest management, including monitoring with pheromone traps and mating disruption. READ MORE

  3. 23. Carbon Balance Implications of Forest Biomass Production Potential

    Author : Bishnu Chandra Poudel; Inga Carlman; Johan Bergh; Thomas Lundmark; Roger Sathre; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; forest management; silviculture; clear-cut forestry; continuous-cover forestry; substitution; total carbon; climate benefit; climate change; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Forests in boreal and temperate forest-ecosystems have importance for carbonbalance since they sequester large amount of atmospheric carbon by uptake ofcarbon-dioxide during photosynthesis, and transfer and store carbon in the forestecosystem. Forest material can be used for bio-fuel purposes and substitute fossilfuels, and supply wood products, which can replace carbon-and-energy-intensivematerials. READ MORE

  4. 24. Regeneration in continuous cover forestry systems

    Author : Charlotta Erefur; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the studies underlying this thesis has been to qualify and quantify the regeneration of tree species in a range of typical growing environments of possible Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) silvicultural systems in boreal forests of northern Sweden. Data presented in Papers I and II show that the light environment did not differ significantly between points at different distances to trees, but it was clearly affected by the stand stem density (SSD). 5. 25. The forestry-wood chain : simulation technique, measurement accuracy, traceability concept

    Author : Sorin Chiorescu; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Träteknik; Wood Technology;

    Abstract : A customer-oriented production philosophy, an integrated forestry-wood chain and the global vision of Precision Forestry are concepts that researchers and people involved in the forest and wood industry have to deal with in the beginning of this new millennium. Fulfilling the specific requirements for dimension, length, biological features and proof-of-origin that customers demand for the wood products entails the existence of advanced methods and tools for understanding and thus controlling the production process along the forestry-wood value chain.
