  1. 1. FPGA-based Instrumentation for Advanced Physics Experiments

    Author : Attila Hidvégi; Samuel Silverstein; Martin Grossmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Instrumentation; Data acquisition; clock distribution; trigger; FPGA; PCB; LHC; ATLAS; XFEL; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : Modern physical experiments often demand advanced instrumentation based on advances in  technology. This work describes four instrumentation physics projects that are based on modern, high-capacity Field-Programmable Gate Arrays, making use of their versatility, programmability, high bandwidth communication interfaces and signal processing capabilities. 2. 2. Developments for the FPGA-Based Digitiser in the PANDA Electromagnetic Calorimeters

    Author : Markus Preston; Per-Erik Tegnér; Samuel Silverstein; Pawel Marciniewski; Allan Hallgren; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; PANDA; calorimeter; FPGA; single event upset; Geant4; Monte Carlo; pile-up; feature extraction; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : The strong interaction between quarks and gluons is one of the fundamental interactions described by the standard model of particle physics. Systems of quarks bound together by the strong interaction are known as hadrons, of which the proton and the neutron are the most common examples. READ MORE

  3. 3. Performance driven FPGA design with an ASIC perspective

    Author : Andreas Ehliar; Dake Liu; Stephan Wong; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; FPGA Optimizations; ASIC and FPGA codesign; Computer engineering; Datorteknik;

    Abstract : FPGA devices are an important component in many modern devices. This means that it is important that VLSI designers have a thorough knowledge of how to optimize designs for FPGAs. While the design flows for ASICs and FPGAs are similar, there are many differences as well due to the limitations inherent in FPGA devices. READ MORE

  4. 4. Embedded high-resolution stereo-vision of high frame-rate and low latency through FPGA-acceleration

    Author : Carl Ahlberg; Mikael Ekström; Ignacio Bravo Munoz; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Computer vision; stereo vision; FPGA; embedded systems; Computer Science; datavetenskap;

    Abstract : Autonomous agents rely on information from the surrounding environment to act upon. In the array of sensors available, the image sensor is perhaps the most versatile, allowing for detection of colour, size, shape, and depth. For the latter, in a dynamic environment, assuming no a priori knowledge, stereo vision is a commonly adopted technique. READ MORE

  5. 5. Single event upsets: measurements and modelling of proton- and neutron-induced errors in a 28 nm SRAM-based FPGA

    Author : Markus Preston; Per-Erik Tegnér; Samuel Silverstein; Pawel Marciniewski; Andreas Heinz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Single event upset; FPGA; radiation damage; Monte Carlo simulation; PANDA; Physics; fysik;

    Abstract : Single event upsets are radiation-induced errors affecting electronic devices, which can cause corruption of processed data. The electromagnetic calorimeter of the PANDA experiment — a hadron-physics experiment currently under development — will employ Xilinx Kintex-7 field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in its readout electronics.
