  1. 11. Modeling and Data Analysis in Cellular Biophysics

    Author : Jacob Kowalewski; Hjalmar Brismar; Anita Aperia; Björn Önfelt; Karl-Eric Magnusson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biophysics; Biofysik;

    Abstract : Cellular biophysics deals with the physical aspects of cell biology. This thesis presents a number of studies where mathematical models and data analysis can increase our understanding of this field. READ MORE

  2. 12. Grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering as a tool to study curved biomembranes on nanostructured surfaces

    Author : Karolina Mothander; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GISANS; Reflectometry; Neutron scattering; Phospholipid; supported lipid bilayer; Nanowires; confocal microscopy; QCM-D;

    Abstract : Curvature in lipid-based biomembranes provides compartmentalization in cells and can act as regulator of biological activity in living systems. The study of these biomembranes require novel model systems and new methods. In this work I have used a supported phospholipid bilayer on a hexagonal array of silicon nanowires. READ MORE

  3. 13. Analysis of Binding Events and Diffusion in Living Cells

    Author : Markus Elsner; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : COPI; Golgi; Diffusion; Glycosyltransferases; Sorting; Molecular; Crowding;

    Abstract : It is well known that diffusion is the main mode of transport in living cells, but the consequences of diffusion in a complex cellular environment are not generally appreciated. In this thesis, we have investigated several aspects of how diffusion properties influence the observability of cellular binding kinetics and how they can be used to obtain information about the environment of proteins and other molecules. 4. 14. Effects of neutrophil activation and differentiation on membrane receptor mobility

    Author : Birgitta Johansson; Nils Petersen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The human neutrophils comprise the first line of defence against invading microorganisms. Activation of membrane receptors for bacterial nformyl peptides, exemplified by formylmethionyl-leucyl phenylalanine (fMLF), and complement cleavage products are instrumental for neutrophil chemotaxis, phagocytosis and activation of the NADPH oxidase, generating reactive oxygen metabolites. 5. 15. Frizzled as a G protein-coupled receptor : the role of disheveled and G proteins for signal specification

    Author : Michaela Kilander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cell communication governed and coordinated by the WNT family of lipoglycoproteins comprises essential physiological processes active throughout the life-span of metazoan organisms. In humans, severe diseases and congenital birth defects have been directly linked to disturbances in WNT signaling. READ MORE
