  1. 16. Sex pheromone biosynthesis in moth pests : From gene discovery to biotechnological production

    Author : Marie Dam; Feromongruppen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lepidoptera; Moths; Sex pheromones; Biosynthesis; Desaturases; Gene characterisation; Transcriptomics; Heterologous expression; Biotechnology; integrated pest management;

    Abstract : Moths (Lepidoptera) are some of the most economically important pests in human agriculture. Conventional insecticides used for management promote insecticide resistance in addition to cause human- and environmental harm. This emphasises an inescapable need for sustainable alternatives and integrated practices. READ MORE

  2. 17. Production and quantification of eritadenine, a cholesterol reducing compound in shiitake (Lentinus edodes)

    Author : Josefine Enman; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biokemisk processteknik; Biochemical Process Engineering;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases are among the main causes of death in our society and there is a strong correlation between enhanced blood cholesterol levels and the development of such diseases. The popular edible fungus, shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes), has been shown to produce a blood cholesterol lowering compound designated eritadenine, and the hypocholesterolemic action of this compound has been quite extensively examined in rats. 3. 18. Production, local trade and diversity of avocado (Persea americana Mill.) in the southern highlands of Tanzania

    Author : Ibrahim Juma; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Avocado (Persea americana Mill) has a long cultivation history in Tanzania and adds to the country’s revenue through trading within (local and commercial avocado cultivars) and outside (commercial cultivars) the country. Research has been, however, scanty to characterize the country’s avocado production, local trading and diversity. READ MORE

  4. 19. Increase of Biogas Production at Wastewater Treatment Plants Addition of urban organic waste and pre-treatment of sludge

    Author : Åsa Davidsson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; pollution control; Miljöteknik; Environmental technology; Miljöstudier; Environmental studies; biogas; anaerobic digestion; sludge; Wastewater; organic waste; methane;

    Abstract : Anaerobic digestion of organic matter results in the production of biogas, which can be used to replace fossil fuels. There is potential for increased biogas production at wastewater treatment plants by digesting urban organic waste either separately or together with the sludge. Biogas production could also be increased by sludge pre-treatment. READ MORE

  5. 20. Fruit tree-based agroforestry on sloping uplands in northwest Vietnam: Effects on soil conservation, tree-crop performance and weed management

    Author : Hung Do Van; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : On sloping land, agroforestry can be a more sustainable way to produce food andother products and services than sole-crop cultivation of crops. This thesis examinedwhether fruit tree-based agroforestry on smallholder farms on sloping uplands canhave a positive impact on sustainability. READ MORE
