  1. 11. Synaptic vesicle endocytosis studied in a living synapse

    Author : Helge Gad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : synapse; synaptic vesicles; endocytosis; clathrin; calcium; dynamin; endophilin; amphiphysin; synaptojanin; microinjection; electron microscopy;

    Abstract : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate by transmitting electrical signals at special sites of contact called synapses. Synapses contain neurotransmitter-filled synaptic vesicles, which fuse with the presynaptic plasma membrane. The neurotransmitter diffuses to the neighboring neuron and triggers a new electrical signal. READ MORE

  2. 12. A radical view of haemoglobin - protein engineering and characterisation

    Author : Marie Grey; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; His-Gln tagging; protein purification; blood substitutes; radical scavenging; superoxide dismutase; E. coli; diglobin; Haemoglobin; protein engineering; aqueous two-phase systems; hydrophobic interaction chromatography;

    Abstract : In recent years shortages of donated blood have become a growing problem for health care systems world-wide. Blood substitutes based on human haemoglobin (Hb) could potentially ameliorate this situation. However, clinical trials have indicated problems due to e.g. READ MORE

  3. 13. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Natural Language Processing in Context

    Author : Lovisa Hagström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NLP; Knowledge representation; Neural network; Vision-and-language models; Grounding; BERT;

    Abstract : Modern NLP models learn language from lexical co-occurrences. While this method has allowed for significant breakthroughs, it has also exposed potential limitations of modern NLP methods. For example, NLP models are prone to hallucinate, represent a biased world view and may learn spurious correlations to solve the data instead of the task at hand. READ MORE

  4. 14. Mechanical properties and microstructure of laser sintered and starch consolidated iron-based powders

    Author : Yu Wang; Jens Bergström; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Powder metallurgy; Laser sintering; Microstructure; Fatigue; Thermal fatigue; Wear; Starch consolidation; Rapid forming; Net shaping; Liquid phase sintering; Nitriding; High speed steels; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materialteknik; Materials Engineering;

    Abstract : In powder metallurgy research field, Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) and Metal Powder Starch Consolidation (MPSC) are relatively new rapid forming techniques to fabricate complex and near net-shaped components. The working principles of DMLS are to melt and fuse metal powder layer by layer in computer controlled systems to pile up components like three dimensional printing. READ MORE

  5. 15. Talking to me? : Risk communication to a diverse public

    Author : Misse Wester-Herber; Lars-Erik Warg; Jan M. Gutteling; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Psykologi; Risk communication; Risk perception; public participation; place-identity; psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; Psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the process of communication of environmental risks. A basic assumption in this thesis is that even though ambitious risk communication efforts can take place, the intended recipients are left with a feeling of alienation: Talking to me? The thesis presents a review of theories developed in the field of risk communication research and theories concerning risk perception. READ MORE
