  1. 1. Crosstalk between Inflammation and Coagulation in Acute Pancreatitis - Experimental and Clinical Studies

    Author : Ellen Andersson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; acute pancreatitis; active site inactivated factor VII; bleeding; coagulation; factor VII; FVIIai; hemorrhagic complications; hemorrhage; interleukin-6; MIP-2; nuclear factor kappa B; tissue factor;

    Abstract : In various inflammatory conditions a close interplay between inflammation and coagulation is known to exist, where coagulation factor VII (FVII) and tissue factor (TF) are considered to be pivotal players. In this thesis the crosstalk between inflammation and coagulation in acute pancreatitis (AP) has been investigated. READ MORE

  2. 2. Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion. Proinflammatory response and organ dysfunction

    Author : Knut Olanders; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; inflammation; cytokine; leukocyte; reperfusion; ischemia; permeability; Intestine; endothelium;

    Abstract : Intestinal I/R is considered to be an important initiating event in several pathophysiological conditions such as trauma, bleeding, sepsis and pancreatitis, frequently leading to concomitant both single and potentially multiple organ dysfunction. The purpose of this thesis was to study mechanims underlying the development of multiple organ dysfunction, with special focus on intercellular proinflammatory regulation in the concurrent development of tissue injury. 3. 3. INITIATION OF EXPERIMENTAL ACUTE PANCREATITIS AND MODULATION OF INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE

    Author : Jakob B Axelsson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nuclear factor kappa B; neutrophils; monocytes; acute pancreatitis; ductal cells; active site-inhibited factor seven; heparan sulfate; lipopolysaccharide; innate immune response;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS), a substance common in the extracellular matrix on epithelial cells is present in the pancreas, lining the duct lumen. During pathological conditions, we propose that it can be shed from the ECM and bind to receptors on the cell surface, thus triggering an inflammatory response, which if excessive can cause acute pancreatitis (AP). 4. 4. Pulmonary Injury Following Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

    Author : Anna Börjesson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reperfusion injury; intestinal ischemia; pulmonary injury; endothelium; cytokines; alveolar fluid clearance; leukocytes; orthopaedics; Surgery; traumatology; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is a potentially life-threatening condition, sometimes leading to a systemic inflammatory response and the potential development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of intestinal I/R on pulmonary function with special emphasis on removal of excess alveolar fluid, pulmonary endothelial barrier permeability, leukocyte accumulation and function, and possible therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of pulmonary injury following intestinal I/R.
