11. Sar Remote Sensing of Sea Ice: Towards automatic extraction of geophysical information
Abstract : Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the ERS-1 satellite have great potential for sea ice remote sensing due to its independence of daylight and clouds. The very high data rate of SAR (over 100 million bits per second) results in an enormous volume of data that threatens the ability of human interpreters. READ MORE

12. Detecting changes in climate and atmospheric composition with tracers in Arctic ice caps
Abstract : Changes in climate and atmospheric composition over decades to a hundred thousand years have been studied by extracting records of various tracers from two Arctic ice cores. A seven metre long ice core of superimposed ice was recovered from the Storöya ice cap in north-eastern Svalbard. READ MORE

14. Fast and reliable alignment and classification of biological macromolecules in electron microscopy images
Abstract : In the last century, immense progress has been made to charter and understand a wide range of biological phenomena. The origin of genetic inheritance was determined, showing that DNA holds genes that determine the architecture of proteins, utilized by the cell for most functions. READ MORE

15. Thermonuclear Instabilities and Plasma Edge Transport in Tokamaks
Abstract : High-energy ions generated by fusion reactions in a burning fusion plasma may give rise to different types of wave instabilities. The present thesis investigates two types of such instabilities which recently have been observed in fusion experiments: the Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode (TAE) instability and the magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability (MCI) which is predicted to give rise to ion cyclotron emission (ICE).
