6. The Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Obesity related Metabolic Traits with Specific Emphasis on Glucose, Insulin and Proinsulin
Abstract : Hyperproinsulinemia is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity and is a predictor for future coronary heart disease. This thesis examines the effect of bariatric surgery on glucometabolic status including insulin and proinsulin responses after meal. READ MORE

7. Age and gender differences in risk factor burden, myocardial dysfunction and cardiovascular events in relation to glucose metabolism
Abstract : The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and heart failure (HF) among individuals with diabetes is at least two times greater than in non-diabetic subjects. However, the excess risk of CVD in diabetic subjects seems to decrease with age. READ MORE

8. Genetic and Metabolic Markers for the Development of Diabetes after Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract : The aims of this work were to determine the prevalence of postpartum diabetes among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in a prospective study 5 years postpartum; to characterize these women according to insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, autoimmunity and genetics; and to identify possible markers and predictors for the development of manifest diabetes. The subjects were recruited through a regional screening programme in which oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) are routinely offered to all pregnant women. READ MORE

9. Impaired Glucose Tolerance in Childhood Obesity : Contribution of Glucagon, GLP-1 and Inflammation
Abstract : In the wake of increased obesity prevalence, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in childhood and adolescence is increasingly common. Given the negative impacts these conditions have on health over time, understanding the pathophysiology in those affected early in life is important. READ MORE

10. Food intake, fibrinolysis and risk factors for cardiovascular disease : studies with special focus on plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1)
Abstract : Elevated plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) activity levels, hyperlipemia, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance and obesity, in particular central obesity, are all related to increased risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Some risk factors are known to be and shown to be influenced by dietary habits.
