1. Mast cells: bad enemies or good friends? : A study of the effects of IgG immune complexes on mast cell biology
Abstract : Mast cells are classically defined as bad enemies to human health due to their critical involvement in IgE-dependent allergy by virtue of the expression of the high affinity IgE receptor, FcgammaRI, on these cells. However, mouse mast cells also express FcgammaRIIB and FcgammaRIIIA, two receptors that bind IgG especially in the form of IgG immune complexes. READ MORE

2. Metal Binding Tags - Characterisation, Use in Bioseparation and Applications of Green Fluorescent Fusion Proteins
Abstract : Most of the recombinant proteins produced nowadays are fused to affinity tags, in order to facilitate their purification through affinity chromato-graphy. Out the different tags available, poly-histidine tags are among the most commonly used and can help purification through immobilised metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC). READ MORE

3. Rational and Combinatorial Engineering of Affinity Proteins Towards Therapeutical Applications
Abstract : Protein engineering has had an immense impact on the development of biological drugs, including replacement therapies with engineered versions of insulin or factor VIII to treat diabetes or bleeding disorders, and monoclonal antibodies to treat cancer and various other malignancies. Now, with the next generation of treatment modalities coming up, including monoclonal reagents based on alternative scaffolds, gene and cell therapies, the importance of protein engineering to tailor-make these treatments is likely to increase further. 4. Exploitation of interactions with the neonatal Fc receptor to manipulate biological half-lives for therapeutic applications
Abstract : Protein engineering provides powerful tools to create useful proteins with desired properties. In this thesis, rational design principles have been used for development of fusion proteins that can interact with the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) for potential medical applications. FcRn is widely expressed in the human body. READ MORE

5. Selection and use of affinity proteins developed by combinatorial engineering
Abstract : In affinity protein biotechnology the selective bindingbetween a chosen protein and an interacting biomolecule isutilized for a variety of applications including bioseparation, detection and therapy. Traditionally, affinity proteinsrecruited for such applications have been derived from naturalproteins or immunoglobulins generated via immunization routes. READ MORE
