  1. 1. Internal fixation of femoral neck fractures

    Author : Leif Hernefalk; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Femoral neck fracture; osteotomy; internal fixation; device; technical principles; scintimetry; radiography; biomechanics; malposition; malreduction; complications; bone necrosis; revascularization; segmental collapse; non-union; elderly; osteoporosis; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The incidence of femoral neck fractures in elderly people is rising requiring large health care resources. Internal fixation of the fracture is the treatment of choice in Scandinavia, but in 20-40% of the cases a late complication such as a segmental collapse of the femoral head after initial bone necrosis, or a non-union of the fracture because of non-healing, will occur. 2. 2. Hip fractures : A biomechanical analysis of fracture strength prediction, prevention, and repair

    Author : Joeri Kok; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Finite element; Bone cement; Femur; Fracture; Experimental mechanics; X-ray imaging;

    Abstract : Due to the aging population, hip fracture incidence has been increasing over the past decades. Measurements of bone mineral density with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry are the gold standard for hip fracture risk assessment, where patients with a low bone density have a high risk of fracture. 3. 3. Multiscale Modelling of Proximal Femur Growth : Importance of Geometry and Influence of Load

    Author : Priti Yadav; Elena Gutierrez Farewik; Marco Viceconti; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bone tissue modeling; deformity; biomechanics; osteogenic index; poroelastic material; octahedral shear stress; hydrostatic stress; fluid velocity; octahedral shear strain; MRI; walking; jumping; sedentation; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Longitudinal growth of long bone occurs at growth plates by a process called endochondral ossification. Endochondral ossification is affected by both biological and mechanical factors. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modelling loading and growth of long bones Modelling loading and growth of long bones

    Author : Priti Yadav; Elena Gutierrez-Farewik; Anders Eriksson; Eva Pontén; Hanna Isaksson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Growth Plate; Finite element analysis; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : The long bones grow by the process of endochondral ossification, which occurs at the growth plate. This process is regulated by biological factors and mechanical factors. The biological factors which contribute to endochondral ossification process are genes, hormones, nutrients etc. The mechanical factor is the load acting on the bone. READ MORE

  5. 5. Atypical femoral fractures: Another brick in the wall : On aspects of healing, treatment strategies and surveillance

    Author : Hans Peter Bögl; Jörg Schilcher; Anna Fahlgren; Gösta Ullmark; Per Aspenberg; Björn Rosengren; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Atypical femoral fractures are stress fractures of the femoral subtrochanteric and diaphyseal region. It is a common notion that these fractures heal poorly, if at all. In this thesis we show that patients with atypical femoral fractures have a good capacity to generate bone and therefore heal fractures. READ MORE
