  1. 1. Engineering cytosolic acetyl-CoA metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Yiming Zhang; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; reverse engineering; flavodoxin; genomic DNA sequencing; ferredoxin; histone deacetylase; adaptive evolution; ferredoxin flavodoxin NADP reductase; pyruvate decarboxylase; citrate synthase; hexose transporter; yeast; mitochondria; aerobic growth; metabolic engineering.; acetyl-CoA; central carbon metabolism;

    Abstract : A Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain carrying deletions in all three pyruvate decarboxylase genes (also called Pdc negative yeast) represents a non-ethanol producing platform strain for biochemical production. However, it cannot grow on glucose as the sole carbon source due to the lack of cytosolic acetyl-CoA for lipid biosynthesis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Electron transport to nitrogenase in Rhodospirillum rubrum

    Author : Tomas Edgren; Stefan Nordlund; Patrick Hallenbeck; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Rhodospirillum rubrum; nitrogen fixation; electron transport; FixABCX; ferredoxin; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Biological nitrogen fixation is a key step in the global nitrogen cycle. In this process, dinitrogen in the air is converted to biologically accessible ammonia, which is further assimilated in to the biosphere. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ultrafast Structural and Electron Dynamics in Soft Matter Exposed to Intense X-ray Pulses

    Author : Olof Jönsson; Carl Caleman; Nicusor Timneanu; Olle Björneholm; Jörgen Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; X-ray free-electron laser; Serial Femtosecond Crystallography; Radiation Damage; Plasma Simulations; Ultrafast Lasers; X-ray Imaging; Diffraction Theory; Ultrafast Phenomena; Hit Detection; Plasma Emission Spectra; Serial Femtosecond Crystallography; Protein Structure; Protein Crystallography; Metalloprotein; Non-thermal Heating; Water; Ferredoxin; NLTE Simulation; XFEL; FEL; SFX; Physics with specialization in Biophysics; Fysik med inriktning mot biofysik;

    Abstract : Investigations of soft matter using ultrashort high intensity pulses have been made possible through the advent of X-ray free-electrons lasers. The last decade has seen the development of a new type of protein crystallography where femtosecond dynamics can be studied, and single particle imaging with atomic resolution is on the horizon. 4. 4. Quantum Chemical Cluster Modeling of Enzymatic Reactions

    Author : Rongzhen Liao; Fahmi Himo; Robert Deeth; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cluster approach; density functional theory; B3LYP; enzyme; mechanism; dinuclear; trinuclear; zinc; tungsten; hydrolysis; decarboxylation; formaldehyde oxidation; hydration; methyl transfer; Quantum chemistry; Kvantkemi; Organic Chemistry; organisk kemi;

    Abstract : The Quantum chemical cluster approach has been shown to be quite powerful and efficient in the modeling of enzyme active sites and reaction mechanisms. In this thesis, the reaction mechanisms of several enzymes have been investigated using the hybrid density functional B3LYP. READ MORE

  5. 5. Base-catalyzed depolymerization of kraft lignin for valuable chemical production

    Author : Kena Li; Institutionen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kraft lignin; Depolymerization; CFR; Membrane filtration; Guaiacol; Vanillin; bioconversion;

    Abstract : Lignin is one of the three predominant biopolymers that make up plants together with cellulose and hemicellulose, and it is the only plant component that is based on aromatic units. The industrial kraft pulping process generates large amounts of lignin, which is currently used to generate heat for the process. READ MORE
