  1. 1. Speciation - What Can be Learned from a Flycatcher Hybrid Zone?

    Author : Chris Wiley; Anna Qvarnström; Lars Gustafsson; Roger Butlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; speciation; reinforcement; fitness; postzygotic isolation; asymmetrical hybridization; hybrid zone; species recognition; mate choice; sexual selection; direct benefits; parasite resistance; delayed plumage maturation; Ficedula hypoleuca; Ficedula albicollis; flycatcher; Biologi;

    Abstract : Studies of hybrid zones offer important insights into the process of speciation. Much of the knowledge to be gained is dependent on an accurate estimation of the strength of pre- and post-zygotic isolation between hybridizing taxa. My results demonstrate that hybridization can variously affect different components of fitness. READ MORE

  2. 2. Determinants of genomic diversity in the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis)

    Author : Ludovic Dutoit; Hans Ellegren; Asher Cutter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; collared flycatcher; Ficedula albicollis; enetic diversity; sexual conflict; effective population size; nucleotide diversity; linked selection; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Individuals vary from each other in their genetic content. Genetic diversity is at the core of the evolutionary theory. Rooted in a solid theoretical framework developed as early as the 1930s, current empirical observations of genomic diversity became possible due to technological advances. READ MORE

  3. 3. Avian Malaria and Interspecific Interactions in Ficedula Flycatchers

    Author : William Jones; Anna Qvarnström; Rebecca Safran; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ficedula; flycatcher; avian malaria; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Parasitism is a core theme in ecological and evolutionary studies. Despite this, there are still gaps in our knowledge regarding host-parasite interactions in nature. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the Evolution of the Avian Transcriptome

    Author : Severin Uebbing; Hans Ellegren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; evolution; gene expression; regulation; RNA-seq; transcriptomics; proteomics; sex chromosome; dosage compensation; divergence; ASE; birds; Ficedula; flycatcher; chicken; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Change in gene expression is a powerful tool for evolution, because seemingly small expression changes can contribute important steps towards adaptation without necessarily affecting the whole organism. There is still much to learn about how gene expression evolves on genome- and population-wide levels, especially in non-model organisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Hybrid sterility and genetic incompatibilities in Ficedula flycatchers

    Author : Carolina Segami; Anna Qvarnström; Scott Edwards; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Speciation; genetic incompatibilities; hybrid sterility; hybrid inviability; single-cell RNA seq; GRC; Ficedula; flycatcher; intrinsic post-zygotic isolation; BDMI;

    Abstract : Although the theory behind the mechanisms generating intrinsic post-zygotic isolation is well established, very few concrete examples of genetic incompatibilities have been described, especially in vertebrates. Consequently, our understanding of the evolutionary forces shaping the appearance of genetic incompatibilities between natural populations and the overall role of genetic incompatibilities in the speciation process is limited.
