  1. 1. Keeping up with retinal photoreceptors and horizontal cells : Labelling and mapping of cells in the normal and diseased embryonic chicken retina

    Author : Maria Blixt; Finn Hallböök; Maria Valeria Canto-Soler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chicken; electroporation; horizontal cells; photoreceptors; retina; piggyBac;

    Abstract : The childhood eye cancer retinoblastoma originates from the retina and its development is initiated while the foetus is in the uterus. Retinoblastoma has a reported incidence of 1 in 15-18 000 live births, and approximately 90% of all patients are diagnosed before the age of 5. READ MORE

  2. 2. Generation of Retinal Neurons : Focus on the Proliferation and Differentiation of the Horizontal Cells and their Subtypes

    Author : Henrik Boije; Finn Hallböök; Paul Layer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; FoxN4; Ptf1a; PH3; G2-phase; Cell cycle arrest; Differentiation; Fate; Commitment; Neurogenesis; Follistatin; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : We have used the chicken retina as a model for investigating cell cycle regulation and cell fate commitment during central nervous system development. This thesis focuses on the characterization of and commitment to the horizontal cell fate in the retina. READ MORE

  3. 3. Neuronal Development in the Embryonic Retina : Focus on the Characterization, Generation and Development of Horizontal Cell Subtypes

    Author : Per-Henrik Edqvist; Finn Hallböök; Steven McLoon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurosciences; Activin; Chick; Follistatin; Interneuron; Isl1; Lim1; Migration; Neurogenesis; Prox1; Transcription factor; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Horizontal cells are retinal interneurons that modulate the output from photoreceptors. Two horizontal cell (HC) subtypes are commonly identified in the vertebrate retina: axon-bearing and axon-less HCs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Exploring the Realm of Gene Expression Differences Between White Leghorn and Red Junglefowl Chickens

    Author : Carolyn Fitzsimmons; Leif Andersson; Finn Hallböök; Dave Burt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; chicken; gene expression; microarray; polymorphism; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : In this thesis we attempted to elicit patterns of gene expression that influence phenotype, and that may also have been altered by thousands of years of domestication and selection, between red junglefowl and White Leghorn chickens. Red junglefowl are the wild ancestor to all domesticated chickens, and poultry in general are highly valued as a research animal and food resource. READ MORE

  5. 5. Modulation of the Progenitor Cell and Homeostatic Capacities of Müller Glia Cells in Retina : Focus on α2-Adrenergic and Endothelin Receptor Signaling Systems

    Author : Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid; Finn Hallböök; Per Ekström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alpha2-adrenergic receptor; Brimonidine; Brn3a; Dedifferentiation; Endothelin; EGFR; ERK1 2; Neuroprotection; NMDA; MIO-M1 human Müller cell; Müller cells; Retina; Retinal ganglion cells; Src-kinase; Transactivation.; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Müller cells are major glial cells in the retina and have a broad range of functions that are vital for the retinal neurons. During retinal injury gliotic response either leads to Müller cell dedifferentiation and formation of a retinal progenitor or to maintenance of mature Müller cell functions. READ MORE
