  1. 1. Lithium-ion Battery Safety - Assessment by Abuse Testing, Fluoride Gas Emissions and Fire Propagation

    Author : Carl Fredrik Larsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fire; thermal runaway; gas emission; gas explosion; propagation; safety; abuse testing; Lithium-ion; cell case explosion; hydrogen fluoride;

    Abstract : Lithium-ion batteries offer high energy and power densities as well as long life time but have a more narrow stability window compared to other battery types and contain reactive and flammable materials. In case of overheating the battery cell can release gas (vent) and, at temperatures of about 150-200 °C, a so called thermal runaway can occur, that is a rapid self-heated temperature increase which is typically accompanied with a large release of smoke and gas, fire and a potential cell case explosion or gas explosion. Abstract : Smoldering fires represent domestic, environmental and industrial hazards. This flameless form of combustion is more easily initiated than flaming, and is also more persistent and difficult to extinguish. The growing demand for non-fossil fuels has increased the use of solid biofuels such as biomass. READ MORE

  3. 3. Decision Analysis in Fire Safety Engineering - Analysing Investments in Fire Safety

    Author : Henrik Tehler; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Safety technology; Byggnadsteknik; Building construction; investment appraisal; epistemic uncertainties; fire safety; Decision analysis; risk analysis; Säkerhetsteknik;

    Abstract : The application of decision analytical methods to the evaluation of investments in fire safety was investigated, particularly with the aim of being able to suggest a method for analysing a specific investment in fire safety for a specific factory. Attention was directed above all at the handling of cases of large epistemic uncertainty regarding both probabilities and utilities, Bayesian decision theory serving as a basis for the development of the method. 4. 4. An Engineering Approach to Fire Fighting Tactics

    Author : Stefan Särdqvist; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; risk management; decision making; fire brigade; fire-fighting tactics; pre-fire planning; fire safety engineering;

    Abstract : This report presents a quantified model as a guide for the Incident Commander to determine the most suitable fire-fighting tactics in advance for given conditions at specific objects. The model is applied to two chemical warehouses. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fire safety evaluation of multifunctional buildings - Special emphasis on antagonistic attacks and protection of sensitive areas

    Author : Martin Nilsson; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; multifunctional building; multipurpose building; antagonism; terrorism; design fire; fire scenario; sensitive areas; electrical appliances room; fire protection; hypoxic air venting; reduced oxygen; fire growth; building code; fire safety engineering;

    Abstract : Multifunctional buildings, often hosting societal important functions, have become increasingly more common during the last years. The combination of many functions within the same building as well as an increased exposure to antagonistic attacks create new, not previously well analyzed problems for fire safety. READ MORE
