  1. 16. Progestagenic Aquatic Contaminants Act as Potent Androgens in Fish : Experimental Studies in Three-spined Stickleback and Zebrafish

    Author : Johan Svensson; Björn Brunström; Ingvar Brandt; Ian Mayer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pharmaceuticals as contaminants; Progestins; Androgenic properties; Fish; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Abstract : The extensive use of pharmaceuticals and their poor removal by wastewater treatment plants has led to the emergence of pharmaceutical compounds as global aquatic contaminants. Progestins, the synthetic analogues to progesterone (P4), are receiving increasing attention as contaminants and have been shown to impair reproduction in fish and amphibians at low ng L-1 concentrations. 3. 18. Oxidation of fish lipids during gastrointestinal in vitro digestion

    Author : Karin Larsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TBARS; HHE; salmon; lipids; TIM; fish; HNE; in vitro digestion; gastrointestinal; aldehydes; cod liver oil; n-3 PUFA; herring; lipid oxidation; MDA;

    Abstract : Fish and many other marine organisms, contain long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA), e.g. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA has shown beneficial effects in diseases related to inflammatory processes, such as cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

  4. 19. Phosphorus Emissions from Fish Farms : Observed and Predicted Effects

    Author : Torbjörn Johansson; Kurt Pettersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Fish farm; phosphorus; eutrophication; model; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Abstract : During the last decades, fish farming has been a rapidly increasing industry in many European and North American countries. Sweden has a large potential for aquaculture, but there is also a strong concern about the effects on the environment that an increased aquaculture production may cause. READ MORE

  5. 20. Climate change impacts on production and dynamics of fish populations

    Author : Per Hedström; Pär Byström; Jan Karlsson; Peter Eklöv; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Temperature; terrestrial dissolved organic carbon; light extinction; GPP; recruitment; winter mortality; metabolism; cohort competition; fish production; fish biomass;

    Abstract : Ongoing climate change is predicted to increase water temperatures and export of terrestrial dissolved matter (TDOM) to aquatic ecosystems influencing ecosystem productivity, food web dynamics and production of top consumers. Ecosystem productivity is mainly determined by the rates of primary production (GPP) in turn controlled by nutrients, light availability and temperature, while temperature alone affect vital rates like consumption and metabolic rates and maintenance requirements of consumers.
