  1. 11. Pathophysiological mechanisms involved in flap ischemia and its treatment : an experimental study with emphasis on the effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide and spinal cord stimulation on ischemia and manipulation of microcirculation in flaps

    Author : Giulio Gherardini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ischemia; microcirculation; Calcitonin gene-related peptide; spinal cord stimulation;

    Abstract : Flap surgery and microsurgery have expanded the therapeutic options of reconstructive surgery. Partial or total flap necrosis, due to circulatory and metabolic events, is, however, still a significant problem for the plastic surgeon. READ MORE

  2. 12. Pedicled and free TRAM flaps in breast reconstructions : a comparative study

    Author : Åsa Edsander-Nord; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : breast reconstruction; TRAM; pedicled flap; free flap; microdialysis; monitoring; flap circulation; flap metabolism; glucose; lactate; glycerol; abdominal muscles; trunk muscle strength; KIN-COM; quantitative sensory testing; tactile perception threshold; thermal perception threshold; breast volume; thermoplastic; quality of life; SF-36; esthetic evaluation; applanation tonometry;

    Abstract : The transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap is frequently used when autologous tissue is desired for breast reconstruction, and it can be transferred pedicled or free. The pedicled TRAM flap is elevated as a lower transverse abdominal flap with the rectus abdominis muscle attached in the epigastric area, by which means the deep superior epigastric vessels nourish the flap. 4. 14. Speech and velopharyngeal function in patients with hypernasality : an investigation utilizing listener judgments, instrumental analysis (NORAM), multiview videoradiography and nasopharyngoscopy

    Author : Jonas Karling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : cleft lip andor cleft palate; cleft palate speech; hypernasality; instrumental analysis; lateral pharyngeal wall movements; listener judgment; mouth breathing; nasal emission; nasopharyngoscopy; oronasal fistula; pharyngeal flap; presurgical orthoped;

    Abstract : This investigation evaluated how velopharyngeal function and speech deficiencies related to velo pharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) were influenced by a) type of cleft, b) site and size of oronasal fistulas and c) pharyngeal flaps. In addition, the accelerometric device, NORAM was evaluated. READ MORE

  5. 15. Perfusion Monitoring During Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery - Opportunities for Optimization of Surgical Techniques

    Author : Khashayar Memarzadeh; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Existing oculoplastic reconstructive surgical techniques are based on empirical knowledge and were established long before perfusion monitoring was possible. It is believed that an avascular graft should always be placed on a vascular bed or flap and also that the viable length of a flap depends on the width of its pedicle. READ MORE
