1. Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Compressible Two-Phase Flow
Abstract : In this thesis we develop, apply and analyse adaptive finite element methods with error control for compressible flow problems, focusing in particular on two-phase flow. The adaptive algorithms, aiming at quantitative error control with efficient use of computational resources, are based on a posteriori error estimates, where the error is estimated in terms of the computed solution, the local mesh-size and certain stability factors. 2. Experimental and numerical investigations of hydrodynamic focusing of colloidal dispersions
Abstract : Dispersed non-spherical particles are the fundamental constituent of many complex fluids. Such fluids are studied both for their industrial and scientific importance, and for their peculiar functional properties (mechanical, optical, thermal, fluidic). READ MORE

3. Studies of sound generation and propagation in flow ducts
Abstract : This thesis contains three papers investigating problems of interest for noise control in ducts. The first part of this thesis treats the sound propagation in rectangular ducts with flexible walls. Various experimental techniques are performed to measure the internal sound propagation and radiation to the surrounding. READ MORE

4. Predicting flow-generated noise from HVAC components
Abstract : More energy efficient fans, i.e. larger sizes running at lower speeds, in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems decrease the fan noise and increase the importance of flow generated noise in other system components, e.g. READ MORE

5. Statistical characteristics of two-dimensional and quasigeostrophic turbulence
Abstract : Two codes have been developed and implemented for use on massively parallelsuper computers to simulate two-dimensional and quasigeostrophic turbulence. The codes have been found to scale well with increasing resolution and width ofthe simulations. READ MORE
