1. On valve controlled fluid power systems : flow amplifier and percussive rock drilling
Abstract : This thesis discusses how the design of hydraulic systems and components can be made to meet the demands of a future market in terms of efficiency, flexibility and cost. It also discusses how computer simulation can support the designer to get a higher knowledge of the system and to make the design phase more efficient. READ MORE

2. Multi-Disciplinary Conceptual Design of Future Jet Engine Systems
Abstract : This thesis describes various aspects of the development of a multi-disciplinary aero engine conceptual design tool, TERA2020 (Techno-economic, Environmental and Risk Assessment for 2020), based on an explicit algorithm that considers: engine performance, engine aerodynamic and mechanical design, aircraft design and performance, emissions prediction and environmental impact, engine and airframe noise, and production, maintenance and direct operating costs. As part of this research effort, a newly-derived semi-empirical NOx correlation for modern rich-burn single-annular combustors is proposed. 3. Modelling level for simulation and design of fluid power systems
Abstract : Hydraulic system modelling is a powerful tool in design work. For a complex system with many parameters it's difficult to realise the effect of a component change. Also the time to calculate this effect will be reduced with a simulation model and there will be more steps in the iterative process to optimise the system solution. READ MORE

4. Thermodynamic Modelling and Performance of Combined Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and Gas Turbine Systems
Abstract : Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a ceramic type of fuel cell operating at elevated temperatures. By utilising the thermal energy from the SOFC in a heat engine, a hybrid cycle with high performance can be achieved. One promising concept is a pressurised SOFC in combination with a recuperated gas turbine cycle. READ MORE

5. Conceptual design of hydraulic systems for automotive engine applications : simulation, optimisation and testing
Abstract : The main contribution of this thesis lies in the area of systems design, and especially of such systems that involve several engineering domains, so-called multidomain or heterogeneous systems. The design of these systems is concerned with a need for efficient tools, especially in the early conceptual phase of the development process. READ MORE
