  1. 1. On Fluoridation of Chewing Sticks (Miswaks) with Respect to Dental Caries

    Author : Hosam A Baeshen; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Approximal area; caries lesions; chewing stick Miswak ; fluoride; fluoride retention; fluoride solution; fluoride toothpaste; impregnation; orthodontic patients; saliva; Salvadora Persica;

    Abstract : The chewing stick known as a “Miswak” is a natural toothbrush that is widely used for cleaning the teeth. It has been used for thousands of years in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the Miswak as a vehicle for fluoride delivery in the oral cavity. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fluoride in surface water and groundwater in southeast Sweden : sources, controls and risk aspects

    Author : Tobias Berger; Mats E. Åström; Pasi Peltola; Henrik Drake; Olle Selinus; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fluorine; fluoride; water-rock interaction; granite; crystalline bedrock; surface water; groundwater; Götemar; drinking water quality; aluminium; speciation; fluorosis; PBA; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to determine the sources, controls and risk aspects of fluoride in surface water and groundwater in a region of southeastern Sweden where the fluorine-rich 1.45 Ga circular Götemar granite (5 km in diameter) crops out in the surrounding 1.8 Ga granites and quartz monzodiorites (TIB rocks). 3. 3. Signal transduction in the brain : modulation of receptor-mediated inositol phospholipid breakdown by potassium and fluoride ions

    Author : Gunnar Tiger; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inositol phospholipid breakdown; muscarinic receptors; potassium; fluoride; rat brain; pig brain;

    Abstract : Neurotransmitter receptor types mediating the generation of intracellular signals are of two types; ligand-gated ion channels and G protein coupled receptors. The effector enzyme phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) is modulated by stimulation of G protein coupled receptors, leading to an increased breakdown of inositol phospholipids ("Ptdlns breakdown"). 4. 4. On caries prevalence and school-based fluoride programmesin Swedish adolescents

    Author : Ulla Moberg Sköld; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : Adolescents; approximal caries; caries epidemiology; caries incidence; caries prevalence; caries progression; fluoride mouth rinse; fluoride varnish; population-based caries prevention;

    Abstract : Dental caries on approximal tooth surfaces in adolescents is still a problem in Sweden, as well as in many other industrialised countries. The aims of the present thesis were therefore: 1) to study whether caries prevalence is underestimated, 2) to evaluate the effect of cessation of fluoride mouth rinse (FMR) programmes in schoolchildren with low caries prevalence, and 3) to reconsider the school as an arena for population-based fluoride (F) varnish and FMR programmes in order to minimise caries development in 13-16-year-olds. 5. 5. Fluoride concentration in plaque and saliva and its effects on oral ecology after intake of fluoridated milk

    Author : Kristina Engström; Svante Twetman; Lars G Petersson; Göran Dahllöf; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : children; enamel; demineralisation; fluoride; lactic acid; laser fluoroscense; milk; plaque; saliva; salivary bacteria; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : According to WHO, the addition of fluoride to milk could be considered as an alternative to water fluoridation for community-based caries prevention in childhood. School-based schemes in developing as well as industrial countries have demonstrated substantial benefits on oral health, but there are limited data available on the local events in the oral cavity after consumption of fluoridated milk.
