  1. 1. Bioenergy from Swedish forests : A Study of extraction methods, quality and effects for forest owners

    Author : Daniel Nilsson; Johan Bergh; Peter Lerman; Gudmund Vollbrecht; Nasko Terziew; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; logging residues; forest fuels; moisture content; needles; nutrients; moisture content measurements; Norway spruce; dry-stacking; fresh-stacking; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : The forest constitutes a very important element of renewable natural resources and makes a significant contribution to the Swedish bioeconomy. Biofuels are Sweden’s largest source of energy; of all the energy we use, 32% comes from biofuels, and of this approximately 85% comes from the forest and the forestry sector. READ MORE

  2. 2. Extraction of logging residues for bioenergy : effects of operational methods on fuel quality and biomass losses in the forest

    Author : Bengt Nilsson; Johan Bergh; Gudmund Vollbrecht; Rolf Björheden; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Forest fuel; Storage; Fraction composition; Needles; Defoliation; Moisture content; Nutrients; Nitrogen; Norway spruce; Picea abies; Skogsbränsle; Lagring; Fraktionsfördelning; Barr; Avbarrning; Fukthalt; Näringsämnen; Kväve; Gran; Picea abies; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood products play a key role in the transformation to a more sustainable society based on renewable bio-based resources, together with the positive effects on climate mitigation by replacing fossil fuels. However, to increase the use of forest fuel in practice it is important to understand the effects of handling and storage on its quality and removal of nutrients from the forest. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ectomycorrhizal community structure and function in relation to forest residue harvesting and wood ash applications

    Author : Shahid Mahmood; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 14C allocation; P uptake; Calcium oxalate; Solubilisation; Tricalcium phosphate; Wood ash; Forest residue; N deposition; rDNA; ITS region; PCR-RFLP; Spruce; Ectomycorrhiza; Community structure; Wood ash colonisation; Spruce colonisation; Competition; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Ectomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with tree roots and assist in nutrient-uptake and -cycling in forest ecosystems, thereby constituting a most significant part of the microbial community. The aims of the studies described in this thesis were to evaluate the potential of DNA-based molecular methods in below-ground ectomycorrhizal community studies and to investigate changes in ectomycorrhizal communities on spruce roots in sites with different N deposition, and in sites subjected to harvesting of forest residues or application of wood ash. Abstract : The direct variable costs for heat and electricity production based on solid biomass fuel combustion is approximately 3-5 times lower than the costs in a fossil fuel-oil based boiler in Sweden. In addition waste derived biomass fuels are typically much cheaper than biomass not classified as waste. READ MORE

  5. 5. Integrating Biomass in Existing Natural Gas-Fired Power Plants

    Author : Erik Pihl; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Forest Residue; Modeling; Hybrid Combined Cycles; Biomass; Gasification; Efficiency;

    Abstract : Using biomass for utility heat and electricity generation can supplement use of fossil fuels, whose emissions of carbon dioxide likely risk causing serious climate change and ocean acidification. Biomass as energy source is a limited resource and when used as fuel in thermal power plants this currently results in higher production costs than using fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal.
