    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the principles of biolubrication, focusing on synergistic effects between biolubricants. To this end surface force and friction measurements were carried out by means of Atomic Force Microscopy, using hydrophilic and hydrophobic model surfaces in salt solutions of high ionic strength (≈ 150 mM) in presence of different biolubricants. 2. 2. Structural and Functional Studies on Evolutionary Repurposing of H-box/NC-proteins : From Host Factor to Virus Protein

    Author : Anna Wehlin; Eleonore von Castelmur; Per Hammarström; Maria Sunnerhagen; Lars-Göran Mårtensson; Lars-Anders Carlson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The Picornaviridae are a large family of biomedically important viruses causing diseases such as the common cold, hepatitis A and polio in humans and foot-and-mouth disease in cattle. These diseases have great impact on people’s everyday life and cause economical losses all around the world. To date, no antiviral treatments are available. READ MORE

  3. 3. Phosphatidylethanol in blood as a marker of alcohol abuse

    Author : Arthur Varga; Associativ inlärning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PKC; MCV; ELSD; HPLC; red blood cell; phospholipase D; phosphatidylethanol; ethanol; alcohol abuse; state marker; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Biological markers offer a way of assessing ethanol intake and determining whether a health problem is alcohol related. This study investigated the use of phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in blood as a new marker of alcohol abuse. READ MORE

  4. 4. Assessing carotid plaque structure

    Author : Isabel Goncalves; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death and disability in the western world. Its clinical complications include acute myocardial infarction, sudden death and stroke. Thirty to 40 % of all ischemic strokes are caused by a carotid stenosis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Phosphatidylethanol - formation and degradation in blood and organs

    Author : Steina Aradottir; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diagnostik; Public health; Diagnostics; organs; blood; HPLC; in vitro; in vivo; human; rat; phosphatidylethanol; phospholipase D; alcohol; ethanol; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi;

    Abstract : Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid formed exclusively by the action of phospholipase D (PLD) in the presence of ethanol. The degradation of PEth is slow and due to its accumulation in some cells the possibility to use PEth as marker of ethanol intake has been proposed. READ MORE
