  1. 1. The Gnetales: fossils and phylogenies

    Author : Catarina Rydin; Else Marie Friis; Mari Källersjö; Ulf Swensson; Susana Magallón; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : seed plants; Gnetales; Ephedra; fossils; DNA; phylogeny; morphology;

    Abstract : The phylogeny of seed plants has been debated for more than a hundred years and is still not fully understood. Morphological analyses have consistently resulted in a phylogeny in which cycads are the earliest diverging seed plants, and Gnetales and angiosperms are sisters. Molecular data has, however, rarely supported this result. READ MORE

  2. 2. Molecular, micro- and ultrastructural investigations of labile tissues in deep time

    Author : Johan Gren; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; eumelanin; fossils; histology; integument; IR microspectroscopy; melanin; melanosomes; molecular palaeontology; ToF-SIMS; XAS;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises investigations of microstructures and molecular remains, preserved in a variety of fossil specimens. The results are presented in six papers, collectively aiming to thoroughly examine fossil traces of such remains by employing a combination of both established and relatively new analytical methods. 3. 3. Advancing Evolutionary Biology: Genomics, Bayesian Statistics, and Machine Learning

    Author : Tobias Andermann; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; computational biology; bioinformatics; phylogenetics; neural networks; NGS; target capture; Illumina sequencing; fossils; IUCN conservation status; extinction rates;

    Abstract : During the recent decades the field of evolutionary biology has entered the era of big data, which has transformed the field into an increasingly computational discipline. In this thesis I present novel computational method developments, including their application in empirical case studies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Micro- and macroevolutionary aspects of body size diversification and thermal adaptation in insects

    Author : John Waller; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : Evolution; body size; Insects; dragonflies; damselflies; Odonata; Comparative methods; fossils;

    Abstract : Body size and body temperature are the two most important traits in biology. In this thesis I show how these twovariables have shaped the evolution of insects over the last 300 million years. READ MORE

  5. 5. Palaeobiology and taphonomy of early problematic fossils

    Author : Mónika Marti Mus; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Historical Geology and Paleontology; Historisk geologi och paleontologi;

    Abstract : Extinct organisms that cannot be accommodated in any extant phylum are generally referred to as "problematic fossils". They are more numerous in progressively older strata and constitute an important part of the late Proterozoic and early Palaeozoic biota. READ MORE
