21. Multiphase Contamination in Rock Fractures : Fluid Displacement and Interphase Mass Transfer
Abstract : Multiphase flow and transport in fractured rock is of importance to many practical and engineering applications. In the field of groundwater hydrology an issue of significant environmental concern is the release of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) which can cause long-term groundwater contamination in fractured aquifers. 22. Hydromechanical Behaviour of Fractures Close to Tunnels in Crystalline Rock
Abstract : The deformation and stiffness properties of rock fractures are important measurable parameters when describing their hydromechanical behaviour. Deformation refers to aperture change. Stiffness refers to the amount of deformation per stress change to which a fracture is subjected. READ MORE

23. Solute transport through fractured rocks : the influence of geological heterogeneities and stagnant water zones
Abstract : To describe reactive solute transport and retardation through fractured rocks, three models are developed in the study with different focuses on the physical processes involved and different simplifications of the basic building block of the heterogeneous rock domain. The first model evaluates the effects of the heterogeneity of the rock matrix and the stagnant water zones in part of the fracture plane. READ MORE

24. Multi-scale modeling and finite element simulation of diffusion in porous media
Abstract : Porous media comprise a large range of natural and industrial materials and are typically complex on multiple length scales. At lower (micro-scopic) length scales, such media consist of a solid skeleton and fluid-filled pores in between. READ MORE

25. The Underground as a Storage Facility. Modelling of Nuclear Waste Repositories and Aquifer Thermal Energy Stores
Abstract : The underground is a vast region, which is, too a large extent, unused by man. It has a large potential as a storage facility due to its vastness and availability. This thesis, which consists of eleven papers and reports, deals with nuclear waste repositories in solid rock and with aquifer thermal energy storage systems. READ MORE
