  1. 1. Synthesis of Optically Active Bicyclo[2.2.2]octane Derivatives - A Study Towards Novel Taxol Mimics and Development of New Chiral Ligands for Asymmetric Catalysis

    Author : Fredrik Almqvist; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lewis acids; Asymmetric reduction; Asymmetric catalysis; Bidentate ligands; Enantioenriched; Optically active; Spiro; Taxol mimic; Bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives; Ti IV complexes; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is a summary of six papers which concern synthesis of optically active bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives. The derivatives prepared are important building blocks in a study towards a possible replacement of the diterpenoidic part of taxol, (baccatin III), so as to construct a taxol mimic. READ MORE

  2. 2. Synthesis of Ring-fused Peptidomimetics : Interacting with Amyloid Fibrils

    Author : Dan E. Adolfsson; Fredrik Almqvist; Anna Linusson; Morten Grötli; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic chemistry; synthesis; peptidomimetics; thiazoline fused 2-pyridones; Alzheimer s disease; Parkinson s disease; Amyloid; Amyloid-beta; alfa-Synuclein; method development; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease are the two most common neurological disorders in humans. Both conditions involve progressive death of neurons in the central nervous system, decline in bodily functions and eventually (and invariably), death. So far, no cure exists and the available treatments can only ease symptoms. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reaction Between Grignard reagents and Heterocyclic N-oxides : Synthesis of Substituted Pyridines, Piperidines and Piperazines

    Author : Hans Andersson; Fredrik Almqvist; Hans Adolfsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Grignard reagents; pyridine N-oxide; pyrazine N-oxide; dienal-oxime; pyridine; ortho- metalation; piperidine; piperazine; asymmetric; Organic synthesis; Organisk syntes; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development of new synthetic methodologies for preparation of bioactive interesting compounds, e.g. substituted pyridines, piperidines or piparazines. Thesecompounds are synthesized from commercially available, cheap and easily prepared reagents, videlicet the reaction between Grignard reagents and heterocyclic N-oxides. READ MORE

  4. 4. Multimodal Porphyrin-Based Conjugates : Synthesis and characterization for applications as amyloid ligands, photodynamic therapy agents and chiroptical materials

    Author : Katriann Arja; Peter Nilsson; Peter Konradsson; Fredrik Almqvist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Organic compounds that interact both with certain biological targets and display specific photophysical properties can be utilized as molecular tools to visualize and possibly effect disease related processes taking place in living organisms. In this regard, porphyrins are a class of naturally occurring molecules that possess intriguingly interesting photophysical properties where they can act as luminescent probes by emitting detectable light, as well as photosensitizers in the light mediated therapy called photodynamic therapy. 5. 5. Synthesis of substituted Ring-Fused 2-Pyridones and applications in chemical biology

    Author : Christoffer Bengtsson; Fredrik Almqvist; Paul Helquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Synthesis; 2-pyridone; 2-thiazoline; cross coupling; pili; curli; antibacterial; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Antibiotics have been extensively used to treat bacterial infections since Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin 1928. Disease causing microbes that have become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy are an increasing public health problem. READ MORE
