1. Changes in the Freshwater System : Distinguishing Climate and Landscape Drivers
Abstract : Freshwater is a vital resource that circulates between the atmosphere, the land and the sea. Understanding and quantifying changes to the partitioning of precipitation into evapotranspiration, runoff and water storage change in the landscape are required for assessing changes to freshwater availability. 2. Land Use, Freshwater Flows and Ecosystem Services in an Era of Global Change
Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to analyse interactions between freshwater flows, terrestrial ecosystems and human well-being. Freshwater management and policy has mainly focused on the liquid water part (surface and ground water run off) of the hydrological cycle including aquatic ecosystems. READ MORE

3. Factors controlling pelagic communities of freshwater ciliates and heliozoans
Abstract : Ciliate diversity and seasonal succession were studied during two years in oligotrophic, acidic Lake Njupfatet. Maximum ciliate abundance occurred shortly after ice-out. After thefirst year, the lake was neutralised by liming. Liming caused changes in the bacterioplanktonand phytoplankton communities, but no change in ciliate diversity. READ MORE

4. Freshwater methane and carbon dioxide fluxes : Spatio-temporal variability and an integrated assessment of lake and stream emissions in a catchment
Abstract : Freshwater bodies such as lakes and streams release the greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Global freshwater CH4 and CO2 emissions have been estimated to be of a similar magnitude to the global land or ocean carbon sink, and are thus significant components of global carbon budgets. 5. Freshwater, density gradients and biological processes in cold, brackish seas : aspects of the biogeophysical fluid dynamics characterising the Baltic Sea
Abstract : The dominant component in the ocean water is freshwater. In this thesis its mixing and the freshwater-induced dynamics are discussed, with cold, brackish basins such as the Baltic Sea especially in mind. A mathematical framework is derived to allow for a consistent way of adding freshwater effects to the governing equations. READ MORE
