  1. 16. Experimental and theoretical studies of nitride fuels

    Author : Merja Pukari; Janne Wallenius; Toru Ogawa; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fast reactor fuel; ab-initio modelling; fuel fabrication; inert matrix nitride fuel;

    Abstract : With respect to nitrides being considered as potential fast reactor fuels, research is conducted on the out-of-pile thermophysical properties, sintering and fabrication processes, gas migration mechanisms, self-diffusion and point defect behaviour of actinide nitrides, their surrogate materials, and the inert matrix material ZrN . The experimental research, carried out in the framework of qualifying fuel for the European Lead Cooled Training Reactor (ELECTRA), shows that sintered ZrN and (Dy,Zr)N pellet densities are influenced by the oxygen concentration in the material. 2. 17. Lateral mixing of solids in bubbling fluidized beds – experimental quantification

    Author : Erik Sette; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; solids cross-flow; lateral dispersion; Solids mixing; fluid-dynamic scaling;

    Abstract : For solid fuels, thermochemical conversion processes such as combustion and gasification are especially suitable to be carried out in fluidized bed units because of the relatively high mixing rates, fuel flexibility and the possibility to use active bed material to enhance process efficiency. Fuels such as biomass and waste, which are commonly used in fluidized beds, are characterized by volatile contents much higher than what is found in fossil fuels such as coal. READ MORE

  3. 18. Macroscopic modeling of fluid dynamics in large-scale circultaing fluidized beds

    Author : David Pallarès; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fuel mixing; fluid dynamics; large-scale circulating fluidized bed; particle tracking;

    Abstract : Satisfactory knowledge of the fluid dynamics governing the gas-solid flow in large-scaleCirculating Fluidized Bed (CFB) units is still lacking, although the CFB technology is widelyused for power (and heat) generation. Due to the complex two-phase flow in large CFB unitsfluid dynamical modeling of practical use is so far limited to a macroscopic approach andavailable models generally focus in describing one of the following key-phenomena: maingas-solid flow pattern, mixing of fuel particles and gas mixing. Author : Christer Bergström; Strömningsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; vibration and acoustic engineering; vacuum technology; hydraulics; Mechanical engineering; Gas turbine.; Temperature fluctuations. Abstract : The way the fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber is one of the most important parameters for the power output and the generation of emissions in the combustion of liquid fuels. The interaction beween the turbulent gas flow field and the liquid fuel droplets, the vaporisation of them and the mixing of the gaseous fuel with the ambient air that are vital parameters in the combustion process. 5. 20. Heat Balance Modeling of a Stationary Fluidized-Bed Furnace Burning Biomass

    Author : Fredrik Niklasson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mixing; modeling; biomass; dispersion; heat balance; fluidized bed boiler;

    Abstract : The influence of biomass fuel properties on the heat balance of the bottom region (bed and splash zone) of a commercial-scale bubbling fluidized-bed furnace is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The experiments have been carried out at the Chalmers 12 MWth research boiler, operated under non-circulating conditions during most of the experiments. READ MORE
