1. Methodologies to assess the fate of polar organic compounds in aquatic environments
Abstract : Polar organic compounds (POCs) are chemicals with polar functional groups in their structure. The functional groups make the compounds hydrophilic and less prone to partition with biota. However, the knowledge of their fate is limited due to difficulties associated with their measurements. READ MORE

2. Physico-chemical properties of some aquatic fulvic acids - functional groups and stability
Abstract : Humic material constitutes a category of naturally produced organicmacrocompounds, widely spread in both terrestrial and aquatic systems and accounting for up to 70% of the total soil carbon and 50% of the dissolved organic carbon in surface waters. Humic material is formed as the result of complex chemical transformations of biomass. READ MORE

3. Surface complexation in natural particle suspensions
Abstract : This thesis is a summary of our studies on (i) the proton and copper adsorption at aqueous illite surfaces, (ii) the proton and copper complexation of humic substances (fulvic acid FA and humic acid HA), (iii) the interaction between illite and fulvic acid, and (iv) the copper complexation behaviors in illite-FA bi-complexant systems. These particular studies were designed to help us develop a framework for modelling heavy metal complexation/adsorption mechanisms at natural particle surfaces. READ MORE

4. Characterization of aluminum in environmental systems using X-ray absorption and vibrational spectroscopy : The importance of organic matter
Abstract : The fate and behavior of many metals in the environment are highly dependent on interactions with natural organic matter (NOM), which is abundant in most soils and surface waters. The complexation with NOM can influence the speciation of the metals by affecting their hydrolysis and solubility. READ MORE

5. Natural aquatic colloidal matter : Characteristics and impact on the mobility of trace metals and organics
Abstract : Natural colloidal (< 1.0 µm) matter plays an important role for tbe transport and redistribution of water-borne substances. The aim of this work was to characterise colloidal matter from surface waters and groundwaters, and to improve on the understanding on the role of natural colloidal matter in the redistribution and mobility of trace metals.
