  1. 16. Ion Beam Analysis of First Wall Materials Exposed to Plasma in Fusion Devices

    Author : Per Petersson; Göran Possnert; Anders Hallén; Marek Rubel; Eduardo C. Alves; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ion beam analysis; Microbeam; Plasma wall interaction; Deuterium; Beryllium; Carbon fibre composites; Divertor; Nuclear reaction analysis; Helium-3; Plasma physics with fusion; Plasmafysik med fusion; Ion Physics; Jonfysik;

    Abstract : One major step needed for fusion to become a reliable energy source is the development of materials for the extreme conditions (high temperature, radioactivity and erosion) caused by hot plasmas. The main goal of the present study is to use and optimise ion beam methods (lateral resolution and sensitivity) to characterise the distribution of hydrogen isotopes that act as fuel. READ MORE

  2. 17. There and back again... An Earth magneto-tale : understanding plasma flows in the magnetotail

    Author : Alexandre De Spiegeleer; Maria Hamrin; Herbert Gunell; Timo Pitkänen; Colin Forsyth; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasma dynamics; Earth magnetosphere; magnetotail; plasma sheet flows; oscillatory flows; burst bulk flows; tailward flows; rymdfysik; Space Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : On average, the Earth's magnetotail plasma sheet seems to be a calm region of the magnetosphere where the plasma moves slowly towards Earth. However, the plasma sheet actually hosts many phenomena, some of which can affect Earth. READ MORE

  3. 18. Impact of material migration on plasma-facing components in tokamaks

    Author : Alvaro Garcia Carrasco; Marek Rubel; Didier Mazon; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fusion; material migration; wall conditioning; diagnostic mirrors; plasma-facing materials; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Plasma-wall interaction plays an essential role in the performance and safety of a fusion reactor. This thesis focuses on the impact of material migration on plasma-facing components. It is based on experiments performed in tokamaks: JET, TEXTOR and ASDEX Upgrade. READ MORE

  4. 19. The evolution of TOFu : Developing and utilizing neutron time-of-flight spectrometry of deuterium and tritium fusion plasmas at JET

    Author : Benjamin Eriksson; Göran Ericsson; Anders Hjalmarsson; Sean Conroy; Jacob Eriksson; Luka Snoj; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fusion; plasma diagnostics; neutron spectrometry; time-of-flight; TOFOR; JET; Fysik med inriktning mot tillämpad kärnfysik; Physics with specialization in Applied Nuclear Physics;

    Abstract : Considerable effort has been invested in attempting to generate electricity from the energy released in controlled thermonuclear fusion reactions, with a European fusion research roadmap stretching beyond 2050. Our current endeavors may culminate in a virtually inexhaustible, low-carbon energy source for future generations. READ MORE

    Abstract : Here I study the “plasma interactions with icy bodies in the solar system”, that is, my quest to understand the fundamental processes that govern such interactions. By using numerical modelling combined with in situ observations, one can infer the internal structure of icy bodies and their plasma environments. READ MORE
