1. X-ray Absorption and Fragmentationas Initial Steps of Radiation Damage in Free Organic Molecules and Nanoparticles
Abstract : Understanding the molecular radiation damage is crucial in radiobiology, molecular physics, and atmospheric science. In this thesis, the initial steps of radiation damage of anhydrous gas-phase molecules and hydrated nanoparticles were studied using synchrotron radiation based electron-ion coincidence spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy under vacuum conditions. 2. The Electronic Structure of Organic Molecular Materials : Theoretical and Spectroscopic Investigations
Abstract : In the present thesis the electronic properties of two organic molecules were studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) in connection to their possible applications in organic photovoltaics and molecular spintronics respectively. The first analysed system is the C60 derivative PCBM extensively used in polymer solar cells for the charge separation process. 3. Atomic Scale Design of Clean Energy Materials : Efficient Solar Energy Conversion and Gas Sensing
Abstract : The focus of this doctoral thesis is the atomic level design of photocatalysts and gas sensing materials. The band gap narrowing in the metal oxides for the visible-light driven photocatalyst as well as the interaction of water and gas molecules on the reactive surfaces of metal oxides and the electronic structure of kaolinite has been studied by the state-of-art calculations. 4. The life and death of perovskites : Interfacial function and degradation of lead halide perovskites studied by photoelectron spectroscopy
Abstract : Lead halide perovskite solar cells are a promising new technology which could soon see widespread commercial application but is partly held back by poor long-term stability. In this thesis, photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) is used to study the dynamical processes at the surface or interfaces of lead halide perovskite materials. READ MORE

5. Influence of defects and impurities on the properties of 2D materials
Abstract : Graphene, the thinnest material with a stable 2D structure, is a potential alternative for silicon-based electronics. However, zero band gap of graphene causes a poor on-off ratio of current thus making it unsuitable for logic operations. This problem prompted scientists to find other suitable 2D materials.
