  1. 16. Perspectives on the role of digital tools in students' open-ended physics inquiry

    Author : Elias Euler; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; Konrad Schönborn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; digital learning environments; modeling; semi-formalisms; microworlds; social semiotics; embodied cognition; disciplinary-relevant aspects; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : In this licentiate thesis, I present detailed case studies of students as they make use of simulated digital learning environments to engage with physics phenomena. In doing so, I reveal the moment-to-moment minutiae of physics students’ open-ended inquiry in the presence of two digital tools, namely the sandbox software Algodoo and the PhET simulation My Solar System (both running on an interactive whiteboard). 2. 17. Using a Social Semiotic Perspective to Inform the Teaching and Learning of Physics

    Author : Tobias Fredlund; Cedric Linder; David Wolfe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social semiotics; semiotic resources; physics education research; interactive engagement; disciplinary affordance; disciplinary-relevant aspects; patterns of disciplinary-relevant aspects; the Variation Theory of Learning; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis examines meaning-making in three different areas of undergraduate physics: the refraction of light; electric circuits; and, electric potential and electric potential energy. In order to do this, a social semiotic perspective was constituted for the thesis to facilitate the analysis of meaning-making in terms of the semiotic resources that are typically used in the teaching and learning of physics. 3. 18. Learning Physics through Transduction : A Social Semiotic Approach

    Author : Trevor Stanton Volkwyn; John Airey; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; David Brookes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Introductory physics; transduction; interactive engagement; social semiotics; representational competence; probeware; mathematical tools; 1-D kinematics; coordinate systems; magnetic field; pedagogical affordance; disciplinary affordance; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis details the introduction of the theoretical distinction between transformation and transduction to Physics Education Research. Transformation refers to the movement of meaning between semiotic resources within the same semiotic system (e.g. READ MORE

  4. 19. The formation of successful physics students : Discourse and identity perspectives on university physics

    Author : Anders Johansson; John Airey; Maja Elmgren; Kathryn Scantlebury; Ellen Karoline Henriksen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : In university physics education, unequal student participation has always been an issue. An example is the fact that men constitute 70–80% of the student body in most countries. READ MORE

  5. 20. Uniformity in physics courses and student diversity : A study of learning to participate in physics

    Author : Anders Johansson; Staffan Andersson; Minna Salminen-Karlsson; Maja Elmgren; Cedric Linder; Maria Berge; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; undergraduate physics education; science participation; discourse; identity; subject position; quantum physics; electromagnetism; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis describes an investigation of participation and achievement in undergraduate physics courses with a discourse analytical lens. Issues of unequal participation have been a growing concern for the physics education research community. READ MORE
