  2. 2. Preservation of parathyroid function in thyroid and parathyroid surgery

    Author : Stefan Ander; Göran Åkerström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Human parathyroid glands; vascular supply; parathyroid preservation; laser Doppler flowmetry; iPTH; autotransplantation; xenotransplantation; a thymic mice; angiogenesis; immunohistochemistry; electron microscopy; ultrastructure; autoradiography; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Preservation of normal parathyroid function and calcium homeostasis after operations on the thyroid and parathyroid glands is a difficult assignment in endocrine surgery, and it is crucial to minimise the risks of permanent postoperative hypoparathyroidism. The aim of this thesis was to study the vascular supply of the parathyroid glands and the revascularisation, growth, and function of transplanted parathyroid tissue, in order to add new information about parathyroid preservation. 3. 3. Wnt/β-Catenin Signalling in Parathyroid Tumours

    Author : Peyman Björklund; Gunnar Westin; Göran Åkerström; Tommy Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; Hyperparathyroidism; β-catenin; Mutation; Human parathyroid cell line; LRP5; Alternative splicing; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) due to parathyroid tumours with hypersecretion of parathyroid hormone and hypercalcaemia is a common disease with incompletely understood etiology affecting more than 1 % of the population, primarily postmenopausal women. In secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT), parathyroid tumours develop in response to calcium and vitamin D deficiency generally in patients with uraemia. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular Genetic Studies of Sporadic and MEN1-Associated Endocrine Pancreatic Tumors

    Author : Daniel Lindberg; Gunnar Westin; Göran Åkerström; Bo Wängberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; pancreatic endocrine tumor; MEN1; LOH; WNT7A; HDAC11; CDK4; CDKN2B p15; CDKN1B p27; CDKN2C p18; c-Myc; Smad4; pyrosequencing; epigenetic; methylation; tumor suppressor; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) may cause typical syndromes of hormone excess, or appear clinically non-functioning without hormonal symptoms. PETs occur sporadically, in association with the multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome, or rarely the von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. READ MORE

  5. 5. Array-based Genomic and Epigenomic Studies in Healthy Individuals and Endocrine Tumours

    Author : Johanna Sandgren; Gunnar Westin; Teresita Diaz de Ståhl; Göran Åkerström; Ola Hessman; Winand Dinjens; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : genome; copy number variants; cancer; Pheochromocytoma; epigenome; array-CGH; ChIP-chip; gene expression; tumour suppressor genes; oncogenes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : The human genome is a dynamic structure, recently recognized to present with significant large-scale structural variation. DNA-copy number changes represent one common type of such variation and is found both between individuals and within the somatic cells of the same individual, especially in disease states like cancer.
