  1. 1. Peripheral blood biomarkers of cell-specific autoimmunity. Studies in children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes

    Author : Falastin Salami; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; biomarkers; children; CBC; autoimmunity; neutrophils; red blood cells; hemoglobin; HbA1c T-cells; prospective follow-up; GAD-alum;

    Abstract : Objective While the incidence of children suffering from autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) is increasing in Sweden and worldwide, the underlying etiology and cellular mechanisms behind this remain unknown. The predisposition of the high-risk HLA DR-DQ genotype and as yet unknown environmental triggers lead to autoimmunity and the onset of T1D, which is preceded by islet beta-cell autoantibodies acting as markers for ongoing autoimmunity. 2. 2. Reign in Blood : Immune Regulation in Type 1 Diabetes

    Author : Mikael Pihl; Rosaura Casas; Johnny Ludvigsson; Marianne Quiding-Järbrink; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease resulting in insulin deficiency as a result ofautoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells. Preserving β-cell function in patients with T1D would be of great benefit since patients with sustained endogenous insulin secretion are known to suffer less from secondary complications due to hyperglycemia. 3. 3. Characteristics of GADA in Type 1 Diabetes following Immunomodulation with GAD65

    Author : Mikael Chéramy; Rosaura Casas; Johnny Ludvigsson; Mona Landin-Olsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a serious autoimmune disease which increases worldwide and affects children at a young age, but there still is no cure available. Clinical intervention trials in recent onset T1D patients are therefore very important, since even a modest preservation of β-cell function has proven to reduce end-organ complications. READ MORE

  4. 4. GAD65 An Immunomodulator in Type 1 Diabetes

    Author : Stina Axelsson; Rosaura Casas; Johnny Ludvigsson; Guro Gafvelin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is caused by a deficiency of insulin as a result of an autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic ² -cells. A possibility to preserve remaining ² -cells in children with newly diagnosed T1D is of great importance since sustained ² -cell function is recognized to result in reduced end-organ complications. 5. 5. Autoantibodies related to type 1 diabetes in children

    Author : Camilla Skoglund; Johnny Ludvigsson; Rosaura Casas; Outi Vaarala; William Hagopian; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease resulting from destruction of the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. The patients need life-long heavy treatment and still complications, both acute and later in life, are common. The incidence of type 1 diabetes has increased rapidly during the last decades, especially among young children. READ MORE
