  1. 1. The importance of immunological, genetic and clinical factors for beta cell function in childhood diabetes

    Author : Eva Örtqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type I diabetes; HLA-DQ; GAD65Ab; 1A-2Ab; ICA; GAD65 epitopeC-peptide; clinical remission; beta cell rest; diazoxide.;

    Abstract : Type I diabetes is caused by environmentally initiated, progressive autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells in genetically susceptible individuals, which results in insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. At diagnosis, about 10-20 % of beta cells remain, but after insulin therapy is started, a period with regained secretive capacity follows. READ MORE

  2. 2. Humoral immunity to recombinant human autoantigens in organ-specific autoimmune disease

    Author : Alberto Falorni; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : IDDM; Addison s disease; autoantibodies; recombinant autoantigens; radioimmunoassay; disease prediction; glutamic-acid decarboxylase; steroid-21-hydroxylase;

    Abstract : Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and idiopathic Addison's disease are organ-specific autoimmune diseases characterized by the presence of circulating autoantibodies. The role of autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of these diseases is not fully understood, but their presence can be used as a marker for diagnosis and prediction. READ MORE

  3. 3. Immunogenetic studies in autoimmune endocrine diseases

    Author : Giovanni Gambelunghe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type I Diabetes; LADA; Addison s disease; HLA; MICA; MICB; autoantibodies;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease characterised by Tlymphocyte infiltration of islets of Langerhans with consequent destruction of beta cells. A permissive genetic background is required for the development of the islet autoimmune process. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects of beta cell and thyroid autoimmunity in children

    Author : Bengt Lindberg; Pediatrisk endokrinologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; virus; vaccination; type 1 diabetes mellitus; thyroiditis; allergy; autoantibodies; Pediatri;

    Abstract : The two most common autoimmune endocrine diseases in children are autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Autoantibodies (ab) can be found several years before clinical diagnosis in both diseases. READ MORE

  5. 5. Population-based analysis of the HLA associated risk for IDDM

    Author : Ingrid Kockum; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; HLA-DR; HLA-DQAl; HLA-DQBl; predispositional allele test; absolute risk; relative predispositional effect; transmission rates; non-inherited maternal haplotypes.;

    Abstract : Insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) is one of the most common chronic illnesses among children and young adults in Sweden. The disease has a complex pattern of inheritance and environmental factors are important. The strongest linkage to IDDM is found on chromosome 6p21 in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) region. READ MORE
