  1. 6. Childhood malignant disease and consequences for growth hormone secretion, intellectual function and cardiovascular risk

    Author : Katarina Link; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone deficiency; Insulin sensitivity; Cranial radiotherapy; Neuropsychological performance; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia; diabetologi; sekretion; Endokrinologi;

    Abstract : In childhood onset growth hormone deficiency (GHD) a reduction in cardiac left ventricular mass (LVMi) and impairment of cardiac systolic function, as well as in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) has been shown. In study I, we showed that a low dose of GH treatment for 10 months resulted in increased LVMi and kidney size. READ MORE

  2. 7. Insulin-like growth factor-I deficiency, insulin sensitivity, and glucose metabolism

    Author : Klas Ekström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In children and adolescents, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) act in concert to stimulate linear growth; however, the effects on glucose metabolism are in opposition. GH increases insulin resistance by lipolysis. READ MORE

  3. 8. Comorbidity and mortality in Prader-Willi syndrome

    Author : Hasanain Shukur; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a multisymptomatic, rare, genetic, disorder, due to lack of the expression of paternal genes in the q11-q13 region of chromosome 15. The main characteristics of PWS are muscular hypotonia, hyperphagia, obesity, behavioral problems, cognitive disabilities, and endocrine deficiencies. READ MORE

  4. 9. Effects of anabolic hormone treatment in elderly patients with hip fracture

    Author : Margareta Hedström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hip fracture; IGF-I; lean body mass; BMD; anabolic steroids; growth hormone.;

    Abstract : The principal aims of these studies were to investigate the status of hip fracture patients regarding BMD, body composition and some nutritional factors at the time of the fracture and changes in these variables during the postoperative period. A further aim was to determine whether anabolic hormone treatment could had any beneficial effects after a hip fracture. READ MORE

  5. 10. Metabolic effects and long-term safety of childhood growth hormone treatment

    Author : Anders Tidblad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects and long-term safety of childhood growth hormone (GH) treatment. In order to achieve this aim, the different projects consist of a two-part clinical trial on metabolic features linked to GH physiology and GH treatment as well as two large population-based cohort studies with focus on the long-term cardiovascular and cancer risks in previously GH-treated patients.
