  1. 11. Fragmented landscapes : Assessment and communication of landscape connectivity in human-dominated landscapes

    Author : Arvid Bergsten; Örjan Bodin; Bo Ebenman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fragmentation; Connectivity; Network; Spatial; Landscape; Dispersal; Planning; Social-Ecological; Scale; IIC; STS; naturresurshushållning; Natural Resources Management;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis summarizes the first half of my PhD on the theme of management of fragmented landscapes. The thesis applies – and reflects on the use of – network analysis of connectivity in relation to landscape planning. READ MORE

  2. 12. UNDERSTANDING URBAN PATTERNS Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches

    Author : Vânia Aparecida Ceccato; KTH; []
    Keywords : urban quality; GIS; spatial statistics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the main field of study is urban patternsand the methodological issues involving the analysis of spatialdata across urban space. Four particular aspects are chosen toillustrate the dynamics of urban space, using Stockholm Countyas case study. READ MORE

  3. 13. Geographic Accessibility Analysis - Methods and Application

    Author : Anders Dahlgren; Fastighetsvetenskap; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; GIS; geographic accessibility; proximity analysis; spatial index; generalization of graphs; network search;

    Abstract : Geographic accessibility to services is important. Having a grocery store and a school nearby are important living conditions and having a rescue station close by could be a life-saver. READ MORE

  4. 14. Subsurface dams in water resource management : methods for assessment and location

    Author : Imran Ali Jamali; Bo Olofsson; Stephen Foster; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Subsurface dams; Groundwater; GIS; Regolith thickness; Groundwater; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Natural groundwater storage can be improved by constructing a subsurface barrier that is a subsurface dam, in order to capture the subsurface flows and raise the groundwater levels (GWLs) in the sediment layers. Subsurface dams are preferable to surface dams because of lower evaporation, higher functionality, lower cost of construction, lessened risk for contamination and the possibility of utilizing land over the dam. 5. 15. Road Ecology for Environmental Assessment

    Author : Mårten Karlson; Berit Balfors; Ulla Mörtberg; Jo Treweek; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Roads; Railways; Biodiversity; Environmental Assessment; GIS; Decision Support; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : Transport infrastructure is closely linked to several politically relevant sustainability issues, and since 1985 a formalized environmental assessment process is linked to planning and construction of new roads and railways in the EU (EU directives 85/337/EEC and 2001/42). The aim of the environmental assessment process is to think in advance; to identify, predict and evaluate significant environmental changes resulting from a proposed activity, in order to adjust the proposed activity accordingly and to avoid unnecessary and unexpected consequences.
