  1. 1. Placental transport of glucose and amino acids in early pregnancy. Cellular mechanisms, regulation and relation to diabetes

    Author : Anette Ericsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : placental transport; diabetes; first trimester; GLUT; system A; hyperglycemia;

    Abstract : Despite strict glycemic control of the pregnant woman with type 1 diabetes fetal overgrowth is still common. The first trimester is often characterized by sub-optimal glucose levels and elevated HbA1C in early pregnancy is a predictor of fetal overgrowth. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hypoxia inducible factor-1α in renal cell carcinoma

    Author : Anders Lidgren; Börje Ljungberg; Torgny Rasmuson; Kjell Grankvist; Anders Bergh; Per-Uno Malmström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; renal cell carcinoma; hypoxia; RT-PCR; angiogenesis; western blot; tissue microarray; protein; mRNA; HIF-1 alpha; GLUT-1; survival; Urology and andrology; Urologi och andrologi;

    Abstract : Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α in Renal Cell Carcinoma Departments of Surgical and Perioperative Sciences, Urology and Andrology; Radiation Sciences, Oncology; Medical Biosciences, Pathology; and Medical Biosciences, Clinical Chemistry, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 2-3% of all human cancers. A distinguished feature of RCC is vascularisation and among the three dominating RCC types conventional RCC (cRCC) generally is more vascularised than papillary RCC (pRCC) and chromophobe RCC (chRCC). 3. 3. The metabolic syndrome : studies on thrifty genes

    Author : Katja Kannisto; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adipose tissue; adiponectin; 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1; BMI; glucocorticoid; GLUT; HAART; HIV; IL-6; insulin; insulin resistance; LDL-cholesterol; leptin; lifestyle; lipodystrophy; LPL; obesity; PPAR; PGC-1; polymorphism; rosiglitazone; skeletal muscle; twins;

    Abstract : The metabolic syndrome consists of a cluster of atherogenic risk factors that include insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity and a procoagulant state with impaired fibrinolysis. Genetic factors might predispose to the metabolic syndrome while the increasing prevalence of visceral and abdominal obesity linked to the shift to more sedentary lifestyles exacerbates the manifestation. 4. 4. Establishing the mechanistic basis of sugar transport

    Author : Abdul Aziz Qureshi; David Drew; Magnus Wolf-Watz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; membrane transport; transport energetics; nucleotide-sugar transporters; glucose transporters; malaria; cancer; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Sugar is a vital molecule required for cell viability and homeostasis. Sugar is important for metabolic energy, energy storage, signaling, structure and osmolyte regulation. Transport of sugar represents an important physiological process. READ MORE

  5. 5. Observations on morphology and function of cutaneous and subcutaneous sensory mechanoreceptors : an experimental study in mammals

    Author : Birgit Stark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : mechanoreceptors; somatosensory organisation; blood-nerve barrier; Glucose transporter-1; nerve regeneration; TGF-ß family; neurotrophin receptors;

    Abstract : Tactile sensory discrimination is dependent upon an intact system of peripheral mechanoreceptors, their nerve fibre afferents with cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglion and the dorsal column-medial lemniscal system which relays tactile information from the skin to the cortex. Injury to any part of the afferent pathways leads to compromised mechanoreceptive perception. READ MORE
