1. Evaluation of fucosylated receptors for Cholera toxin in the human small intestine
Abstract : Cholera toxin (CT) produced by Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent for the diarrheal disease cholera. Cholera is yearly afflicting millions and is estimated to kill over 100 000 people every year. In this thesis I aimed to better understand the role of noncanonical CT receptors, e.g. READ MORE

2. Detection of Lipids and Proteins on Biological Surfaces using Imaging Mass Spectrometry
Abstract : Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a technique that can be used for imaging the spatial distribution of many different molecules at the same time. It is very sensitive for detection of small biomolecules, such as lipids, whereas larger biomolecules, such as peptides and proteins, cannot be detected as intact entities due to fragmentation. 3. Fluorescence studies of complex systems : organisation of biomolecules
Abstract : The homo and hetero dimerisation of two spectroscopically different chromophores were studied, namely: 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diazas-indacene (g-BODIPY) and its 5-styryl-derivative (r-BODIPY). Various spectroscopic properties of the r-BODIPY in different common solvents were determined. READ MORE

4. Optical characterization of potential drugs and drug delivery systems
Abstract : This Thesis is a characterization study on substances having potency as drugs as well as on a lipid based drug-delivery matrix. The optical properties of newly synthesized molecules with proven pilicide properties have been characterized with several spectroscopic methods. READ MORE

5. Translational studies of molecular interactions in Parkinson’s disease
Abstract : Interactions between molecules are the basis of cellular function. In disease, these tightly regulated systems are often disturbed. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is recognized by protein aggregates in the brain of erroneously interacting molecules, directly linking the clinical picture to the molecular mechanisms. READ MORE
