  1. 16. Motor function and cognition : aspects on gait and balance

    Author : Anna Pettersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Introduction: Cognitive dysfunction and dementia are linked to physical disability and are the major cause of dependency and institutionalization in the elderly. Physical therapists deal with disability yet little clinical and research attention has been given to the physical disability experienced in people with cognitive dysfunction. READ MORE

  2. 17. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis : disease consequences and treatment effects on muscle strength, gait and pain

    Author : Eva Broström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Gait; muscle strength; kinematics; kinetics; pain;

    Abstract : Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) may have a profound effect on the life of a child. Rheumatic diseases in children manifest mainly as synovitis, pain, stiffness, deformity, growth disturbances and fatigue. It is not uncommon to have reduced activity, lower aerobic endurance, and decreased muscle strength. READ MORE

  3. 18. Velocity controlled dynamometry and gait analysis : development of methods and applications

    Author : Lennart Gransberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Dynamometry; torque; measurement error; overshoot; isokinetic; concentric; eccentric; gait analysis; three-dimensional; electrogoniometer; electromagnetic tracking;

    Abstract : The isokinetic systems developed in the present study can measure torque in maximal voluntary and passive movements. The torque recordings may be combined with surface EMG recordings from pairs of antagonistic muscles involved in the movement. Healthy subjects and patients with spastic paresis have been examined. 4. 19. Physical Activity and Alzheimer's Disease : Measurements, Observations and Subjective Experiences

    Author : Ylva Cedervall; Anna Cristina Åberg; Lars Lannfelt; Lena Kilander; Per-Olof Sandman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Caregiver; continuity theory; dementia; dual-task; gait analysis; in-depth interview; mixed methods research; participant observation; physical capacity; qualitative; selfhood; walking; Physiotherapy; Sjukgymnastik fysioterapi; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Abstract : Gait disturbances such as slow walking speed and step-to-step variability have been reported among people with mild Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and as risk factors for functional decline, dependency, and falls. Additionally, AD-related emotional reactions and decreased initiative can lead to physical inactivity. READ MORE

  5. 20. On the treatment of tibial fractures using the Ilizarov fixator

    Author : Telmo Oliveira Ramos; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tibial fracture; external fixation; load; EQ-5D; NHP; VAS; intramedullary nail; gait analysis; randomised study;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to analyse the results of the Ilizarov method in patients with different types of tibial fracture and compare them with conventional methods, in terms of primary union, complication rates, post-operative function, quality of life, and how the patients´ gait was affected during rehabilitation. Fifty-eight patients with isolated diaphyseal fractures (Study I) were randomised to treatment with either the Ilizarov method (IL) or locked intramedullary nailing (IM). READ MORE
