  1. 1. Galactic Structure Revealed by Space Astrometry

    Author : Johan Holmberg; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomi; cosmic chemistry; Galactic structure; Milky Way Galaxy; Galactic kinematics and dynamics; Galactic chemical evolution; moving groups; solar neighbourhood; dark matter; astrometry; Hipparcos; space research; Astronomy; rymdvetenskap; kosmisk kemi; Space technology; Rymdteknik; Fysicumarkivet A:2001:Holmberg;

    Abstract : This work demonstrates how the structure of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, can be unveiled with the use of space astrometry. It consists of two parts, of which the first is a brief introduction to the fields of Galactic structure, covering the Galaxy's stellar constituents, how the Galaxy was formed and how it has evolved over time, both chemically and kinematically. 3. 3. Studies of molecular clouds at the Galactic centre

    Author : Roland Karlsson; Kambiz Fathi; Aage Sandqvist; Andreas Eckart; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galactic centre; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Interstellar molecular clouds play an essential role in the Universe. Such clouds are invoked for the production and destruction of stars, galaxies and gas and also for energy transport in galaxies. READ MORE

  4. 4. The nature of kinematic structures in the Galactic disc

    Author : Iryna Kushniruk; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxy : evolution; Galaxy: structure; Galaxy : kinematics and dynamics;

    Abstract : The velocity distribution of stars in the Galactic disc is complex and consists of a vast number of kinematic structures, that is, stars that share similar velocity components. The reasons why some stars move together may be different and are related to dynamical processes connected to the Galaxy, both internal as well as external ones, such as resonances with the Galactic bar or the Galactic spiral arm structure, dissolution of open clusters, or merger events with other galaxies. 5. 5. Supernova surroundings on circumstellar and galactic scales

    Author : Anders Nyholm; Jesper Sollerman; Peter Lundqvist; Philip James; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supernovae; circumstellar medium; SNe Type IIn; iPTF13z; intermediate Palomar Transient Factory; active galactic nuclei; SN 2014J; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Some stars cease to be in a bright and destructive display called a supernova. This thesis explores what we can learn about supernovae (SNe) by studying their immediate surroundings, and what the SNe can teach us about their environments. READ MORE
