  1. 1. Gravitational lensing as a probe of the first stars and galaxies

    Author : Claes-Erik Rydberg; Erik Zackrisson; Lise Christensen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stars: Population III; first stars; Galaxies: high-redshift; Galaxies: Population III; dark ages; reionization; techniques: photometric; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the potential for detection and identification of primordial stars, galaxies, and supernovae at high redshift.Simulations indicate that the first Population III stars should appear in minihalos of mass M = 105-106 Msol at z ≈ 10-30. READ MORE

  2. 2. Observations of submillimeter galaxies and of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect toward clusters of galaxies

    Author : Daniel Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis describes observations of a population of high-redshift, dusty star-forming galaxies: thesubmillimeter (submm) galaxies. The submm galaxies detected so far are very massive and lumi-nous systems, with huge star-formation-rates (SFR>100Myr−1), large reservoirs of moleculargas (Mgas∼1×1010M) and large dynamical masses (Mdyn>1010M). 3. 3. Observing Lyman alpha emitters - How does Lyman alpha escape from galaxies?

    Author : Andreas Sandberg; Göran Östlin; Lucia Guaita; Matthew Hayes; Caryl Gronwall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : The Lyman alpha (Lyα) emission line has grown to become one of the most successful tools for finding galaxies at high redshift. At redshifts corresponding to the early cosmic times of reionization and primeval galaxy formation, the wavelength of Lyα is still accessible with ground-based facilities. READ MORE

  4. 4. Stochastic Chemical Evolution : A Study of Scatter in Relative Elemental Abundances in Extremely Metal-poor Stars

    Author : Torgny Karlsson; Bengt Gustafsson; Mike Edmunds; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; nucleosynthesis; chemical evolution; Galactic evolution; supernovae; chemical abundances; Population II stars; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik;

    Abstract : Chemical evolution addresses the problem of the formation of the chemical elements and their evolution throughout the history of the universe. This thesis discusses in particular the chemical evolution in the young universe and what we may learn from the observations of the oldest stars. READ MORE
