  1. 1. Game of crops : genetic composition and adaptation of seed orchard crops

    Author : Alisa Heuchel; Xiao-Ru Wang; David Hall; Ulfstand Wennström; Jaroslaw Burczyk; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; seed orchards; GBS; linear deployment; tree improvement; genetic diversity; adapation; topgrafting; Scots pine; Norway spruce; improved reforestation material; field performance; flowering stimulation; fertility variation; Genetics; genetik; environmental science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Orchard populations are artificial and intensively managed populations of elite, best-performing trees that are established for mass production of genetically improved seeds. Seed orchards connect cycles of selection, breeding, and testing of plus-trees with the deployment of the improved seeds at the operational plantations. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genetic variation in a large game species, the moose (Alces alces) : patterns of differentiation and some management implications

    Author : Christina Reuterwall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Management of wildlife populations frequently involves selective harvesting, resulting in different death rates for different sexes and age groups. Such selectivity always has specific effects on the population breeding structure and can thereby affect the rate and magnitude of genetic changes with consequences on the genetic composition of the population. 3. 3. Large-scale releases of native species : the mallard as a predictive model system

    Author : Pär Söderquist; Högskolan Kristianstad; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []

    Abstract : Human alteration of natural systems, and its consequences are of great concern and the impact on global ecosystems is one of the biggest threats that biodiversity stands before. Translocations of invasive species, as well as intraspecific contingents with non-native genotypes, whether they are deliberate or unintentional, are one such alteration and its consequences are continuously being assessed. 4. 4. Effects of seed size and habitat on recruitment patterns in grassland and forest plants

    Author : Karin Lönnberg; Ove Eriksson; Per Milberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seed size; seedling establishment; seedling survival; recruitment; seed removal; co-existence; game-theory; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : A trade-off between seed size and seed number is central in seed ecology, and has been suggested to be related to a trade-off between competition and colonization, as well as to a trade-off between stress tolerance and fecundity. Large seeds endure hazards during establishment, such as shading, drought, litter coverage and competition from other plants, better than do small seeds, due to a larger amount of stored resources in the seed.
