  1. 1. Volatile metabolites from microorganisms in indoor environments : sampling, analysis and identification

    Author : Anna-Lena Sunesson; Alvin Fox; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adsorbents; Analysis; Cultivation; Determination; Gas chromatography; Identification; Indicator substances; Indoor air; Mass spectrometry; Metabolites; Microbial volatile organic compounds; Optimization; Sampling; Sick buildings; Thermal desorption; Aspergillus versicolor; Cladosporium cladosporioides; Paecilomyces variotii; Pénicillium commune; Phialophora fastigiata; Streptomyces albidoflavus;

    Abstract : Microorganisms are able to produce a wide variety of volatile organic compounds. This thesis deals with sampling, analysis and identification of such compounds, produced by microorganisms commonly found in buildings. READ MORE

  2. 2. Real-time breath gas analysis of carbon monoxide : laser-based detection and pulmonary gas exchange modeling

    Author : Ramin Ghorbani; Florian M. Schmidt; Anders Blomberg; Christoffer Boman; Staffan Schedin; Jonathan Beauchamp; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbon monoxide CO ; pulmonary gas exchange; computational modeling; real-time breath gas analysis; single-exhalation profile; laser absorption spectroscopy; nonlinear least-squares fitting; breath sampling; baseline level; diurnal variation; healthy population; exposure study; fysik; Physics; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Abstract : Breath gas analysis is a promising approach for non-invasive medical diagnostics and physiological monitoring. Real-time, breath-cycle resolved biomarker detection facilitates data interpretation and has the potential to improve the diagnostic value of breath tests as exhalation profiles carry spatiotemporal information about biomarker origin and gas exchange in the respiratory tract. 3. 3. Aerosols of Isocyanates, Amines and Anhydrides : Sampling and Analysis

    Author : Jakob Dahlin; Gunnar Skarping; Robert P. Streicher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; isocyanate; amine; aminoisocyanate; organic acid anhydride; denuder; impactor; impinger; air sampling; LC-MS; LC-CLND; di-n-butylamine; DBA; thermal degradation; aerosol; particles; TDI; MDI; HDI; ICA; MIC; IPDI; exposure; occupational health; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis presents methods for air sampling and determination of isocyanates, amines, aminoisocyanates and anhydrides. These organic compounds are generated during thermal degradation of polymers such as polyurethane (PUR) or epoxy.Isocyanates, amines and anhydrides are airway irritants known to cause occupational asthma. Abstract : Isocyanates are mainly used in the industry for the production of polyurethane (PUR) plastics. Workers are at risk of being exposed during the manufacturing of PUR. During thermal degradation of PUR, isocyanates are released and workers involved in hot work such as fire-fighting, welding etc. may also be exposed. READ MORE
