  1. 1. Depression and Antisocial Behaviour in Adolescents : Influence of Social Status, Shaming, and Gene-Environment Interaction

    Author : Cecilia Åslund; Kent W Nilsson; Jerzy Leppert; Bengt Starrin; Lars Oreland; Lil Träskman-Bendz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adolescent; antisocial behaviour; depression; gene-environment interaction; maltreatment; monoamine oxidase; serotonin; shame; social status; Child and adolescent psychiatry; Barn- och ungdomspsykiatri; barn- och ungdomspsykiatri; Child and Youth Psychiatry;

    Abstract : This thesis investigated (1) social status and shaming experiences in relation to aggressive behaviour and depression, and (2) gene-environment interactions between two genetic polymorphisms related to the serotonergic system – MAOA-VNTR and 5HTTLPR – and experiences of maltreatment in relation to delinquent behaviour and depression among adolescents. The four included studies are based on questionnaire data from the Survey of Adolescent Life in Vestmanland 2006 (SALVe-2006). READ MORE

  2. 2. Gene-Environment Interaction in Adolescent Deviant Behaviour

    Author : Kent W. Nilsson; Leif Lindström; Lars Oreland; Jerzy Leppert; John Öhrvik; Rickard L. Sjöberg; Marie Åsberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurobiology; Adolescent; Alcohol; Criminology; Genes; Environment; Monoamine Oxidase; Serotonin; Social Support; Neurobiologi; Neurobiology; Neurobiologi;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore gene-environmental (G*E) interactions in relation to deviant behaviour among 200 Swedish adolescents, with a focus on criminality, alcohol consumption and depressive symptoms. Those behaviours have been extensively investigated in relation to both psychosocial and biological risk factors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gene-environment interactions in rheumatoid arthritis : quantification and characterization of contributing factors

    Author : Xia Jiang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease characterised by persistent synovitis, systemic inflammation and autoantibodies. RA has a complex aetiology with the involvement of genetic factors and environmental triggers, and their interactions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Gene-environment interactions for arsenic metabolism and metal-related oxidatively generated DNA damage

    Author : Karin Engström; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; AS3MT; methylation; polymorphism; 8-oxodG;

    Abstract : Over 100 million people around the world are exposed to high concentrations of arsenic (As) in drinking water, associated with a number of adverse health effects such as skin, lung and bladder cancer, vascular diseases and diabetes. In humans, As is metabolized via alternating reduction and methylation reactions, from inorganic As (iAs) into monomethylated (MMA) and dimethylated As (DMA). READ MORE

  5. 5. Fibrinogen and susceptibility to myocardial infarction : role of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions

    Author : Maria Nastase Mannila; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Atherothrombosis; epistasis; fibrinogen; fibrinogen gamma; fibrin clot structure; haplotypes; myocardial infarction; pleiotropy; SNPs;

    Abstract : Fibrinogen, the precursor of fibrin, is a glycoprotein synthesized in the liver and maintained in plasma at concentrations normally ranging between 2-4 g/L. The fibrinogen molecule consists of two sets of three non-identical polypeptide chains, which are encoded by the fibrinogen gamma (FGG), fibrinogen alpha (FGA) and fibrinogen beta (FGB) genes clustered on chromosome 4.
