1. Explaining everyday problem solving
Abstract : How well can we explain natural occurrences of cognitive behaviours given the theoretical frameworks available to us today? The thesis explores what has to be assumed in cognitive theory in order to provide such an explanation, in contrast to being able to predict behaviour under controlled circumstances. The behaviours considered are all of the type described as involving higher level cognition or being representation hungry. READ MORE

2. On random satisfiability and optimization problems
Abstract : In Paper I, we study the following optimization problem: in the complete bipartite graph where edges are given i.i.d. weights of pseudo-dimension q>0, find a perfect matching with minimal total weight. READ MORE

3. A Constraint-Based Approach for Hybrid Reasoning in Robotics
Abstract : The quest of AI and Robotics researchers to realize fully AI-driven integrated robotic systems has not yet led to such realizations, in spite of great attainments in both research areas. This thesis claims that one of the major hindrances to these realizations is the lack of attention to what we call “the hybrid reasoning problem”. READ MORE

4. Rare-event simulation with Markov chain Monte Carlo
Abstract : Stochastic simulation is a popular method for computing probabilities or expecta- tions where analytical answers are difficult to derive. It is well known that standard methods of simulation are inefficient for computing rare-event probabilities and there- fore more advanced methods are needed to those problems. READ MORE

5. Efficient Compilation for Application Specific Instruction set DSP Processors with Multi-bank Memories
Abstract : Modern signal processing systems require more and more processing capacity as times goes on. Previously, large increases in speed and power efficiency have come from process technology improvements. However, lately the gain from process improvements have been greatly reduced. READ MORE
