1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia
Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. Genetic changes in lymphoid leukemia
Abstract : It is today generally accepted that the vast majority of malignant tumors arise as a result of genetic changes in critical genes involved in the tightly regulated control of cell growth and cell death. Despite the remarkable progress in the identification of such genes during the past two decades, many cancer genes probably remain to be identified. READ MORE

3. Psychological and Behavioral Aspects of Receiving Genetic Counseling for Hereditary Cancer
Abstract : The overall aims of this thesis were to investigate psychological and behavioral effects of receiving cancer genetic counseling for breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer and/or with a family history of these cancer types and to determine whether counselees’ informational needs were met. Study I was performed 3-7 years post-counseling. READ MORE

4. Genetic Disequilibria and the Interpretation of Population Genetic Structure in Daphnia
Abstract : Understanding the processes that shape the spatial distribution of genetic variation within species is central to the evolutionary study of diversification and demography. Neutral genetic variation reflects past demographic events as well as current demographic characteristics of populations, and the correct interpretation of genetic data requires that the relative impact of these forces can be identified. 5. Monitoring gene level biodiversity - aspects and considerations in the context of conservation
Abstract : The objectives of this thesis relate to questions needed to be addressed in the context of genetic monitoring for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity for the gene level. Genetic monitoring is quantifying temporal changes in population genetic metrics. READ MORE
