  1. 1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    Author : Tibor V Varga; Genetisk och molekylär epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. 2. Genetic changes in lymphoid leukemia

    Author : Marianne Hammarsund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : CLL; HCL; genetic aberrations; 13q14; chromosome 5; antisense; bicistronic;

    Abstract : It is today generally accepted that the vast majority of malignant tumors arise as a result of genetic changes in critical genes involved in the tightly regulated control of cell growth and cell death. Despite the remarkable progress in the identification of such genes during the past two decades, many cancer genes probably remain to be identified. READ MORE

  3. 3. Psychological and Behavioral Aspects of Receiving Genetic Counseling for Hereditary Cancer

    Author : Afsaneh Hayat Roshanai; Karin Nordin; Richard Rosenquist; Yvonne Brandberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hereditary cancer; genetic counseling; psychological distress; adherence; genetic knowledge; risk perception; sharing genetic information; at-risk relatives’ experiences; informational needs; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Public health science; Folkhälsovetenskap; Psychology; Psykologi; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : The overall aims of this thesis were to investigate psychological and behavioral effects of receiving cancer genetic counseling for breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer and/or with a family history of these cancer types and to determine whether counselees’ informational needs were met. Study I was performed 3-7 years post-counseling. READ MORE

  4. 4. Genetic Disequilibria and the Interpretation of Population Genetic Structure in Daphnia

    Author : Lars M. Berg; Xavier Vekemans; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; breeding system; linkage disequilibrium; dispersal; genetic structure; Daphnia pulex; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Abstract : Understanding the processes that shape the spatial distribution of genetic variation within species is central to the evolutionary study of diversification and demography. Neutral genetic variation reflects past demographic events as well as current demographic characteristics of populations, and the correct interpretation of genetic data requires that the relative impact of these forces can be identified. 5. 5. Monitoring gene level biodiversity - aspects and considerations in the context of conservation

    Author : Johan Charlier; Linda Laikre; Nils Ryman; Kjetil Hindar; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; brown trout; conservation genetics; genetic drift; genetic monitoring; effective population size; moose; one-sample approach; spatial genetic structure; statistical power; temporal data; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Abstract : The objectives of this thesis relate to questions needed to be addressed in the context of genetic monitoring for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity for the gene level. Genetic monitoring is quantifying temporal changes in population genetic metrics. READ MORE
