  1. 1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia

    University dissertation from Lund University: Faculty of Medicine

    Author : Tibor V Varga; [2016]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetic epidemiology; Genetic polymorphism; dyslipidaemia; Cholesterol; Triglyceride; Genetic risk; genetic risk score; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Prediction; Gene-environment interactions; Randomized controlled trial; prospective cohort studies; Observational study; GLACIER Study; Diabetes Prevention Program;

    Abstract : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. 2. INDIVIDUAL GENETIC RESEARCH RESULTS Uncertainties, Conceptions, and Preferences

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Jennifer Viberg Johansson; Uppsala universitet.; [2018]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Incidental findings; genetic risk information; research participants; risk perception; free choice; framing; conceptions of genetic risk; making sense of genetic risk; preferences for genetic risk information;

    Abstract : This thesis contributes to the ethical discussion on how to handle incidental findings in biomedical research using sequencing technologies from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Study I and II are theoretical studies that used conceptual analysis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Population genetic analyses in the orchid genus Gymnadenia a conservation genetic perspective

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Susanne Gustafsson; Uppsala universitet.; [2003]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Genetic engineering; Orchidaceae; Gymnadenia; conservation; microsatellites; genetic structure; mating pattern; Genteknik; TECHNOLOGY Bioengineering Genetic engineering including functional genomics; TEKNIKVETENSKAP Bioteknik Genteknik inkl. funktionsgenomik; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Abstract : Small populations are facing a particular risk of extinction due to a lack of appropriate genetic diversity and associated negative effects, factors dealt with in the discipline of conservation genetics. Many orchid species exhibit characteristics that make them a perfect study object in the scope of conservation genetics. READ MORE

    Abstract : The overall aims of this thesis were to investigate psychological and behavioral effects of receiving cancer genetic counseling for breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer and/or with a family history of these cancer types and to determine whether counselees’ informational needs were met. Study I was performed 3-7 years post-counseling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic Risk Factors for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus From Candidate Genes to Functional Variants

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Universitetsbiblioteket

    Author : Anna-Karin Abelson; Uppsala universitet.; [2008]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; SLE; association study; complex disease; genetic; MEDICINE Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine Clinical genetics Medical genetics; MEDICIN Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin Klinisk genetik Medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to identify genetic variants that increase the susceptibility for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease caused by a complex interplay between various genetic and environmental factors. Five different candidate genes were selected through different strategies, and were analysed for association with SLE in an attempt to distinguish some of the underlying mechanisms of this disease.
