  2. 2. Setting the Holocene clock using varved lake sediments in Sweden

    Author : Lovisa Zillén; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; Physical geography; tephrochronology; palaeomagnetic secular variations; radiocarbon time-scale; Holocene varved lake sediments; varve chronology; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study annually laminated (varved) Holocene lake sediment in Sweden, their formation and their potential as chronological and palaeoecological archives. Five lakes with continuous Holocene varved lake sediment sequences in northern (Västerbotten) and west central Sweden (Värmland) were investigated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Validating the existence of the supercraton Vaalbara in the Mesoarchaean to Palaeoproterozoic

    Author : Ashley Gumsley; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : Vaalbara; Kaapvaal Craton; Pilbara Craton; U-Pb geochronology; paleomagnetism; supercontinent; large igneous province; dyke swarm; sill province;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the longevity and continuity of the Vaalbara supercraton is addressed in six papers aimed at placing new temporal and spatial constraints onthe supercraton in the Mesoarchean to Paleoproterozoic. It has been speculated since the 1960’s that the Kaapvaal Craton in southern Africa, together withthe Pilbara Craton in Western Australia existed as a single landmass during the Precambrian – the Vaalbara supercraton. 4. 4. Tree-limit ecotonal response to Holocene climate change in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden

    Author : Jonas Bergman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tree-limit ecotone; alpine vegetation; tephrochronology; peat humification; plant macrofossils; Palaeobotany; fylogeni; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; palynologi; Geologi; Geology; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology; Fysisk geografi; cartography; Holocene climate; palaeoecology; marklära; kartografi; pollen influx;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetational and climatic development in the Sylarna-Storulvån area, western Jämtland, in the central Scandes Mountains. Temporal trends and fluctuations in the elevation and vegetational character of the tree-limit ecotone were studied mainly by means of pollen and plant macrofossil analysis of two lake sediment sequences (Lakes Stentjärn and Spåime), located above the present-day tree-limit. 5. 5. Sveconorwegian orogenesis in the southwestern Baltic Shield - Zircon geochronology and tectonothermal setting of orthogneisses in SW Sweden

    Author : Jenny Andersson; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Petrology; Geologi; fysisk geografi; physical geography; Geology; structural markers; augen gneiss; orthogneiss; migmatite; ion microprobe; Pb-Pb evaporation; U-Pb; geochronology; zircon; Sweden; Mylonite Zone; Western Segment; Sveconorwegian orogen; Eastern Segment; mineralogy; geochemistry; Petrologi; mineralogi; geokemi;

    Abstract : The Mylonite zone (MZ) is a prominent late-Sveconorwegian lithological terrane boundary in the SW Baltic Shield along which large-scale crustal block movements took place during the Sveconorwegian orogeny. The southern section of the MZ also defines a conspicuous metamorphic break separating upper amphibolite and high-pressure granulite facies rocks in the parautochthonous Eastern Segment (ES), from middle amphibolite facies rocks in the overlying Western Segment (WS).
